Prevalence of Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis

Extracranial carotid artery is a well-established risk factor for IS.
About 7% of all ischemic strokes are attributed to extracranial carotid stenosis. However, the burden of asymptomatic disease is much larger.
Most studies use Doppler ultrasound as the screening tool and defined signifcant carotid as 50% or greater.
In the Framingham study cohort of 1116 subjects aged 66–93 years, the prevalence of signifcant carotid stenosis was 7% in women and 9% in men.
independent predictors of carotid atherosclerosis are:- 1. Older age,
2. cigarette smoking,
3. higher SBP and
4. high .

The prevalence of moderate (50–69%) carotid stenosis increased from 0.2% in men

During surgery, a pituitary microadenoma can be distinguished from normal gland tissue by its lighter yellow color, softer texture, and reduced vascularity. It often has a subtle dissection plane separating it from the normal gland. In Cushing’s disease, it’s typically centrally located, while in acromegaly, it’s more lateral and gelatinous.
