Periprosthetic fractures of the femur are the third cause of revision after a total hip arthroplasty.

Similar figures are reported after a total knee arthroplasty. Open reduction and internal fixation are indicated if a stable implant is present. Furthermore, some reports suggest the same treatment even in situations where the prosthesis stability can be compromised. Fracture nonunion and implant failure are still a concern and can account for 8–25%. Patients with comorbidities and altered bone quality where a previous implant has already failed represent an extraordinary complex scenario for revision surgery.
