Did you know lipedema was first identified in 1940 by Drs. Allen and Hines at the Mayo Clinic?

Despite this early discovery, the condition received little attention for decades. Only a handful of studies were published from the 1950s to the 1970s. This lack of awareness meant generations of undiagnosed patients lived with lipedema without understanding what was happening to their bodies.

Every bit of awareness we share today helps change that story.

“Pulmón de palomitas”: el costo irreversible del vapeo en la juventud. En abril de 2025, The Conversation reportó el caso de un adolescente estadounidense diagnosticado con bronquiolitis obliterante, una enfermedad que causa cicatrices permanentes en los bronquiolos —las vías respiratorias más pequeñas—, provocando daño pulmonar crónico e irreversible tras vapear en secreto durante tres años.

Esta enfermedad se identificó por primera vez en trabajadores de fábricas de palomitas de maíz, donde estaba asociada al diacetil, un aditivo alimentario seguro al ingerirse pero tóxico al inhalarse. Hoy, el riesgo proviene de más de 180 compuestos saborizantes usados en líquidos de vapeo, muchos diseñados para atraer a adolescentes con sabores frutales y dulces.

Cuando estos compuestos se calientan en los dispositivos de vapeo se transforman en moléculas tóxicas que inflaman y cicatrizan los bronquiolos, causando síntomas crónicos como tos persistente, sibilancias, fatiga y dificultad para respirar. Los expertos advierten que, sin regulación estricta y campañas educativas, los casos en jóvenes seguirán en aumento.
