"I believe that psychoanalysis will in the not too distant future examine itself afresh, will reorganize its basic stance, will transmute its inheritance into new, creative initiative. And, because it is the science that reaches farthest into the breadth and depth of the human soul, I suggest that it will be the leader in the revolutionary undertaking of shifting the hierarchy of the values of the scientist of the future.

Pride in clear vision and realism will turn into the nonconflictual enjoyment of ego functions. But scientific empathy, the broadening and strengthening of this bridge toward the other human being, will be the highest ideal.

If the analyst will lead the sciences of tomorrow into this direction, he will most significantly have entered the decisive battle of the future: the struggle between the human world, a world in which the varieties of psychological experience are cherished, and a nonhuman world, the world foreseen by Kafka, whose regimentations and regularities resemble the inexorable laws that establish the organization of inorganic matter.

We cannot predict how this battle will end or where the victory will ultimately lie. But we do know on which side the psychoanalyst must fight, upon which side psychoanalysis, this new sun among the sciences of man, will shed its understanding warmth and its explaining light."
