Intestinal ischemia can result from various pathologic conditions. The presentations of ischemia can range from acute to subacute and from mild to severe. Diagnosis of this condition can pose challenges, particularly in the early stages of potentially salvageable disease. A review by Theodore et al. in NEJM Evidence provides an overview of intestinal anatomy and a discussion of the pathophysiology and etiology of various forms of intestinal ischemia.
