I took this photo of a supplement label on a farm call recently because I felt it was the perfect example of several points I’ve discussed on other posts.
FEEDING RATES- This particular supplement is recommended at 1-2oz per day and lists the levels at the 1oz and 1lb dose. Many supplements ONLY list the per POUND level even if the recommended rate is in OZ, which is totally fine, but is something to consider when looking at inclusion rates of specific nutrients or when comparing products.
PERCENTAGES- Look at the protein percentages. It provides 34% protein, regardless if you feed 1 lb. or 1 oz. However, if we do the math, 1lb provides 154 grams of protein, or 22% of a 700 gram/diet, and 1oz only provides about 9.6 grams, or 1.3% of that same diet. The percent of a nutrient is all relative to the amount fed.
BALANCED NUTRIENTS- Zinc should be balanced at a 3:1 ratio to copper. If you’re feeding a feed that is pre-balanced with proper levels of zinc and copper, the addition of more zinc could throw off that ratio (notice zinc on the label, no copper). Too much zinc can interfere with the absorption of copper, and copper is important in immune function, tendon, ligament and bone maintenance and repair, and reproduction. Especially when adding multiple supplements, be aware of which nutrients are guaranteed and if any are included in multiple supplements (and/or in your feed) to avoid over feeding or unbalancing the diet.
