Get in the room 🔥

Last weekend, I had the honour and privilege to be in the room with some incredible women founders and innovators at the HerStory Pitch Competition, hosted by The51 at Inventures in Calgary.

I was blown away by the creativity, grit and success of the participants in the competition - their businesses and products are truly going to change the world.

And even more - I was impressed with the spirit of support and collaboration that was palpable in the room.

All of the women founders, even though they were in "competition" with each other, were relentlessly supportive of one another.

In a room full of inspiring women, ideas ignite like sparks, and wisdom flows like a river.

They say you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with - and we all have the choice of who we surround ourselves with.

Get in the room with women who support you...Who will believe the best of you, no matter what...Who have your best interests at heart...Who you can be vulnerable with...Who will inspire you to dream bigger...Who will not allow you to play small.

The Pocket Society will be a powerful community of women who are passionate about living lives of meaning and purpose - finding "balance" between multiple (sometimes competing) roles, writing their own powerful stories and learning how to be more themselves every day. 🔥

If this sounds like the room you want to be in, reach out to me for more details, or join us at AmyOliver.ca/pocketsociety

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve let a challenging case at work give me the impression that I am “just not smart enough to figure it out.”

Only to realize later, that in fact - the case itself was incredibly hard, and even the specialist was puzzled.

In the book "The Confidence Code," authors Katty Kay and Claire Shipman write about how women are more likely than men to attribute failures to themselves rather than external factors.

And even with years in practice, I can confess that I am more likely to attribute something being hard as evidence of my inadequacy than it being just really, really hard.

But the good news is that confidence is not a fixed trait that we either have or don't have. It's something that we can cultivate and grow over time.

Here are a few tips that have helped me increase my own confidence:

1. Catch the doubting thought: If you notice yourself assuming you’re the problem rather than the problem being really hard, be mindful and catch this cognitive distortion in the moment. Realize that you are simply caught in false thinking patterns, and they can be rewired by intentionally reframing your thoughts.

2. Keep a “wins” log: Gather evidence of the times you have made the right choice, trusted your gut or got excellent feedback on your skills and competency. Reflect on it when your inner mean girl is bringing you down and use it as evidence to disprove your false thoughts.

3. Seek out support: Talk to others in your field and review the case with them - more often than not, they’ll remind you how awesome you are! Find a safe space to vent, reflect and learn. Having a supportive community of like-minded women is invaluable as a female health professional or leader.

Remember - confidence can be cultivated, but it must be intentional.

When we have confidence in our own decisions and skills, we move through life with more self-trust and waste less time ruminating.
