I, Dra. Destinee Loper, endorse this book as well as the authors book launch announcement below:
The book is titled, Tourette’s & Me: Micah’s Story. This book touches my family in a personal and real way. It’s a fictional book but is based on some of our daughter’s own experiences.
Our daughter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the age of seven years old. I’m sure some of you are asking, “What is that?” That’s the same reaction we had once we received the diagnosis. It’s a nervous system disorder, which causes tics in the form of involuntary repetitive movements or sounds.
Some of you may remember the former LSU basketball player, who has Tourette Syndrome and went on to star in the NBA. Our daughter’s tics aren’t as extreme as what he experienced, but they are enough to make life more challenging for her. Face Timing with her daily, for some reason would make Tourette Syndrome and her experience weigh heavily on my mind and heart, along with the consistent notion of authorship. I didn’t know what all that meant, but I was about to find out because I couldn’t shake either one of them.
Eventually, words started appearing in my little black notebook, and they wouldn’t stop. It was more of a calling, or should I say, my next purpose. I knew the importance of a book such as this, and after joining different Tourette’s Syndrome’s Facebook groups and learning their stories, it gave me validation that my heart was leading me in the right direction in providing knowledge about an important yet unfamiliar disorder.
Being a rookie writer, I thought “Wow, you got this!” Little did I know the small yet important factors that must work in unison to bring the book to fruition. It motivated me to think I had the gall to be of some assistance in making Tourette’s Syndrome and the families surviving with it to become a household name like other disorders and disabilities.
Very few people, including my family, knew about this project because I needed to be completely dialed in.
Not only is this book relevant, but it’s also necessary for educational purposes so others can view the inside of individuals who struggle daily, not only with Tourette Syndrome itself, but for those who don’t have a clear understanding of it, so they can stop the bullying and mistreatment of individuals with disabilities and disorders.
In getting this book out, maybe the suffering inflicted, both physically and mentally, that these individuals endure from others, may decrease and remove or lessen the negative stigma. This may also allow them not to have to fight so hard to hold their tics in while outside of their safe spaces because it’s difficult and takes a great deal of concentration. Once they return to those safe spaces, they release all the ones that were held in.
Imagine being an athlete and using body parts to perform on a constant basis. Eventually, those parts wear down, causing altrenative and holistic treatments, physical therapy, surgery, permanent damage or limited usage. That’s what tics physically do to individuals, especially when diagnosed at a young age. So just imagine the mental aspect of not being able to stop something that’s causing harm to yourself.
I’ve been in contact with the Tourette Association of America, Inc. (TAA) and some of the Tourette State Chapters to inform them of the book, and they were encouraged and supportive because they know more people will be receiving information about the disorder.
