Mexico has enshrined animal welfare protections in its national constitution, a move hailed by advocates as a global milestone.

The changes prohibit mistreatment, extend protection to all animals including those raised for food, require animal welfare to be taught in schools, and give the federal government power to legislate on the issue.

The reforms pave the way for a forthcoming General Law of Animal Welfare, Care, and Protection, which is expected to cover farming, research, wildlife, and companion animals.

Supporters say the changes could transform animal protection across Latin America. But experts warn that enforcement, funding, and resistance from powerful agricultural interests will determine whether the measures have real impact.

What two phrases do we hear most in rescue?

"I would like you find them a good home."
"I don't want them going to a kill shelter because they could be euthanized."

While these are reasonable questions from well-intentioned, compassionate people, my question in return is, "What is your solution?". I feel that question makes me sound harsh or uncaring, but it's the very opposite.

If you don't want cat and kittens euthanized... YOU have to make sure all the cats you are feeding or caring for are fixed.

If you don't want cats and kittens euthanized... YOU have to fix them BEFORE they get pregnant.

If you don't want cats and kittens euthanized... YOU have to make space for them.

If you don't want cats and kittens euthanized... YOU have to participate in TNR.

If you don't want cats and kittens euthanized... YOU may have to face the decision of a pregnant spay abort.

Shelters and rescues are doing all they can with what they have and it is not their responsibility to make sure MILLIONS of animals are saved. It is their job to do as much as they can to save as many as they can, but that is YOUR job as well.

To all the folks who think there's a magical place all these cats and kittens can go, I'm here to relay the bad news that there's not. There is nowhere to house the estimated 50-80 million homeless cats in the US. This is why they are euthanized... because of us. Because humans intentionally or accidentally let them breed and then expect someone else to swoop in and fix their problem. That is an unreasonable expectation placed on the shoulders of shelter and rescue workers daily.

Open your eyes to the fact that YOUR litter is not the only litter right now. And that if you want help during this very busy season, please reach out to every shelter and rescue in your area. BUT if they are full, it is not their fault! You may need to face the reality of the bigger picture. And if your plan is to give them away unvetted and unfixed, be aware that some of those kittens may never be fixed and will go on to create even more unwanted litters.

So, what IS the solution?
Good news: UNWANTED LITTERS ARE 100% PREVENTABLE!
The ONLY humane solution is spay and neuter. If you disagree, we welcome your solutions in the comments below.

We are looking forward to this event! We'll be sharing three volunteer opportunities: recovery at clinic, helping with trap/neuter/release, and transporting animals to/from clinic. See you there!
