TEAM,
PERSONAL BLOOD TYPE PATCHES:
we've all seen these. Patches that individuals commonly wear on their bags, kits, boots, packs, and hats. They are popular added attire.
But IS IT SAFE AND REASONABLE?
---> simply put, NO.
Medical decisions should NOT be made off these patches. They offer false security and can cloud clinical judgement.
REASONING:
1. Many people do not have their blood type accurately type specific.
2. Many people don't understand the seriousness of blood type importance. I knew an individual who had both B + and B- patches and would display them interchangeably based on his "mood of the day"
3. People switch and borrow equipment all the time. Especially during chaotic situations. .
NOTE: the number one cause of mortality in blood transfusion is clerical lab errors. Giving blood not compatible---> ABO Incompatibility can lead to death. Rapid hemolytic reactions with total circulatory collapse and DIC. .
NOTE: an individual who receives a complete "massive" transfusion can literally change blood types.
EMERGENCY RELEASE BLOOD: regardless of what patch or tag anyone presents with, myself and our team will give Type O neg (child bearing age) and men, or Type O pos. These are "universal donor blood types".
Don't risk someone's life on unverified information. The risk vs reward isn't appropriate in this context. .
Please know, I used to wear these exact patches. I had my blood type patch on my kit/hat. It was poor clinical understanding on my part at that time and was also used as a fashion statement. They have sense been removed from my gear. .
Just something to think through.
