in Ayurveda, spring is the time to do a seasonal cleanse which includes easy to digest diet, herbs and a reset of daily habits.
Spring carries the qualities of wetness, heaviness, and warmth, which align with Kapha dosha (earth + water elements). As the weather warms, the snow melts, and moisture increases, Kapha can become excessive, leading to feelings of sluggishness, congestion, and allergies if not balanced.
How This Affects You
You might feel heavier, more lethargic, or sluggish as Kapha accumulates.
Congestion, allergies, and mucus buildup are common in spring.
Digestion may feel slower, making it easier to gain weight.
You may experience mental fog, dullness, or lack of motivation.
How to Balance Kapha in Spring
To counteract the heavy, damp qualities of spring, Ayurveda recommends:
✅ Eating lighter foods – Favor bitter greens, astringent fruits, and warm, dry meals. Avoid heavy, oily, or cold foods.
✅ Using warming spices – Ginger, black pepper, turmeric, cumin, and cayenne help ignite digestion and clear mucus.
✅ Getting active – Movement is key to shaking off winter stagnation. Try yoga, brisk walks, or dancing.
✅ Waking up early – Avoid sleeping in, as it increases Kapha’s heaviness. Aim to rise before 6 AM.
✅ Dry brushing & self-massage – Dry brushing stimulates circulation and lymphatic flow, helping to reduce excess Kapha.
I don't know about you but the last few months have been heavy - not all bad but those lessons that come with some pain - not to mention the chaos upending everything we know to be right and the unbelievable anxiety of....what's next?
I, for one am looking forward to letting go and getting some energy and mental clarity for the season.
