Medical cannabis is usually well tolerated by older adults.

"In an observational study with 201 older adults with 65 years of age or older cannabis was well tolerated and associated with reduced pain. They started a treatment with cannabis and completed a 3-month follow-up. The study was conducted by Canopy Growth Corporation in Toronto, Canada.

The most common symptoms for which medical cannabis was authorized were pain (85.0%) and insomnia (4.8%). At baseline and at the 3-month follow-up, CBD-dominant products were authorized most frequently (54%), followed by balanced products (42%), and then THC-dominant products (4.4%). There were significant reductions in worst pain, average pain, and overall pain severity, but not pain right now or least pain. Authors wrote that “results suggest medical cannabis was safe, well-tolerated, and associated with clinically meaningful reductions in pain in this sample of older adults.”

Cannabis use in gastroparesis is associated with lower risk of vomiting

"An analysis of data from about all 50,000 patients with gastroparesis revealed, that those using cannabis had a lower risk of vomiting. Investigators of the Department of Internal Medicine Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas and other hospitals from the US used a nationwide inpatient sample database from January 2012 to December 2014. The patients included in this study were the ones with primary diagnosis of gastroparesis and cannabis use.

The prevalence of cannabis use among patients hospitalized for gastroparesis was 4.2%. Cannabis use was associated with lower odds of vomiting. Patients who used cannabis were younger than non-users and more often of African American, Asian, or Pacific Islander descent. They had Medicaid insurance and a lower median household income"

The effect of cannabis on fibromyalgia may in part be explained by an improvement of mood.

"According to a study with 323 fibromyalgia patients reduction in pain by the use of cannabis was partly explained by improvement of sleep and mood. Researchers of McGill University in Montréal, Canada, conducted a 12-month prospective study. Cannabis use in all patients was initiated under the care of physicians.

Analyses indicated that reductions in patients’ levels of pain intensity were partly explained by concurrent reductions in sleep problems and negative affect. This remained significant even when accounting for patients' baseline characteristics or changes in medical cannabis directives over time"

CBD may reduce symptoms of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

"In a study with 54 patients, who underwent cancer chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel or capecitabine and oxaliplatin, CBD attenuated symptoms of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Participants received either 150 mg of CBD twice-daily or a placebo for 8 days starting one day before initiation of chemotherapy. Patients were treated at the Department of Clinical Oncology and Palliative Care of Zealand University Hospital in Roskilde, Denmark.

Patients receiving CBD together with chemotherapy showed significantly lower (better) change in Z-scores in high-frequency vibrometry. The difference between CBD and placebo group was most pronounced for patients receiving carboplatin and paclitaxel. Authors concluded that “CBD attenuated early symptoms of CIPN with no major safety concerns.”

The use of cannabis is associated with a lower risk of liver cancer

"Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the world. According to a data analysis of about 101 million patients those with a diagnosis of cannabis abuse were 55% less likely to have liver cancer. The study was conducted by investigators of scientific institutions in Cleveland, Washington DC, Springfield and Phoenix.

A total of 101,231,036 patients were included in the study. Out of the total, 996,290 patients (1%) had the diagnosis of cannabis abuse versus 100,234,746 patients (99%) in the control group without cannabis abuse. Patients with cannabis use had more hepatitis B, hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis, and smoking, but had less obesity and gallstones. After adjusting for potential confounders, patients with cannabis abuse were 55% less likely to have liver cancer"

A cannabis extract was superior to long acting opiates in patients with neuropathic back pain

"A retrospective analysis of data from the German Pain e-Registry of adult patients, who initiated either a treatment with the cannabis extract Sativex or with long acting opiates between March 2017 and March 2020 showed that the cannabis extract “was superior to and better tolerated than add-on treatment with typical oral LAO [long acting opioids] analgesics in patients with neuropathic back pain inadequately controlled by recommended/established systemic therapies.”

The analysis was conducted by several German pain specialists.

655 patients were treated with the cannabis extract and 655 were treated with long acting opioids. The cannabis extract was associated with superior pain reduction and further symptoms, including physical function, improved more with the cannabis extract. With cannabis fewer patients experienced side effects or discontinued treatment because of side effects".

Cannabis may be helpful in endometriosis

According a retrospective electronic record-based study with 252 women by investigators of Western Sydney University and the University of Melbourne, Australia, cannabis may be helpful in the treatment of pain and other symptoms in women suffering from endometriosis. Self-rated cannabis efficacy, defined as a function of initial and final symptom ratings, was investigated across the included symptom clusters of cramps, pelvic pain, gastrointestinal pain, nausea, depression, and low libido.

Participants recorded 16193 sessions using cannabis between April 2017 and February 2020. The most common method of ingestion was inhalation (67.4%), with pain as the most common reported symptom being treated by cannabis (57.3%). Authors concluded that cannabis “appears to be effective for pelvic pain, gastrointestinal issues and mood, with effectiveness differing based on method of ingestion. The greater propensity for use of an inhaled dosage delivery may be due to the rapid onset of pain-relieving effects versus the slower onset of oral products.”
