Field technician position: tropical forest ecosystem ecology and climate change in Puerto Rico.
We anticipate hiring a field technician position at the University of California, Berkeley (https://nature.berkeley.edu/silverlab/) to assist with a project investigating the controls on greenhouse gas emissions from tropical soils and the impact of climate change on ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry in Puerto Rico.
Primary job duties will include help with running and maintaining field sensors and equipment, help with establishment and maintenance of experimental field plots, field soil sampling, sampling processing in the lab, and data entry and management. The technician will work closely with postdocs and graduate students in the group. The field site is at El Verde Research Station, a Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) location and Critical Zone Observatory (CZO), in Puerto Rico.
Minimum requirements: A bachelor's degree in ecology, biology, geology, environmental science, or a similar field of study. The ability to work full days under hot/humid field conditions, the ability to walk on slippery steep slopes carrying up to 40 lbs., comfort learning and performing basic machine maintenance (e.g., changing the oil in a generator), and a valid driver’s license.
Desired qualifications: Field and laboratory experience in ecosystem ecology or related fields. Training in trace gas flux methods, experience with dataloggers or other automated scientific equipment, comfort with computer and instrument repair (hardware and software), conversational Spanish.
Positions will begin as early as May 25, 2016, and will last 9-12 months. Applicants should indicate dates of availability in their application letter.
Pay rate will be dependent upon qualifications.
