4 stages of Hearing Loss

1. Mild Hearing Loss (25dB-39dB)
Diagnosed when the most quiet sounds you can hear are between 25 and 39 decibels (dB). Usually facing difficulty hearing soft consonant sounds in speech, but with sharp or loud vowel sounds might not be an issue. On this stage, you may have trouble following conversations from time to time, especially when there’s a lot of background noise or in crowded situations. Sound like water dripping and ticking of clock cannot be heard in anymore.

2. Moderate Hearing Loss (40dB-69dB)
Diagnosed when the most quiet sound you can hear are between (40dB to 69dB). Hearing aids are recommended as the hearing loss is usually significant enough to impact daily life. On this stage, it is becoming difficult to hear in many situations and your participation ability in most conversation will be affected. Normal phone conversation will be hard. Without hearing aids assistance, you will face difficulty to hear most sounds. Even a nearby vacuum cleaner running and dog barking may not be heard.

3.Severe Hearing Loss (70dB-89dB)
Diagnosed when the most quiet sound you can hear are between (70dB to 89dB). A powerful hearing aids are needed to navigate your daily life since this stage is considered very hard of hearing. You cannot hear conversational speech at all, and you’ll likely struggle to hear loud speech. You may not even hear when a person shouts at you.

4.Profound Hearing Loss (>90dB)
Diagnosed when the most quiet sound you can hear is more than 90dB. You may need a really powerful hearing aids or cochlear implants to help you hear well again. Usually hearing loss at level 4, you will struggle to communicate with people. Writing your thought, lip-reading or sign language or combination of these may required in order to communicate with others.
