Diabetes in pregnancy is an important condition that needs to be recognised early and managed appropriately. Thanks to TV3 for the invitation to discuss this and increase the awareness among the public.

Diabetes mellitus and heart failure can co-exist in the same patient. Patients with heart failure are at increased risk of developing diabetes and patients with diabetes often have a higher morbidity and mortality rate if they also suffer from heart failure.

Almost every day I receive at least a patient or two who had been newly diagnosed with diabetes. Some present with severe symptoms of high blood glucose levels, but some are incidentally detected when they come for other reasons, for example chest pain or even when they get admitted due to Covid-19. It's important to raise awareness about diabetes and the benefits of prevention, early screening and detection.
