Arrowroot has been used for over 7,000 years for various applications.
Arrowroot comes from the Maranta arundinacea plant, which is part of the Marantaceae family. It is not technically a root but an underground mass of roots or root system.
The name "arrowroot" is applied to starches from several plants, depending on the location:
- Tulema arrowroot (Canna coccinea) from the West Indies
- East India arrowroot (Curcuma angustifolia)
- Brazilian arrowroot (Manihot esculenta)
- Otaheite or South Pacific arrowroot (Tacca pinnatifida)
- Portland or Dorset, England arrowroot (Arum maculatum)
Up until the mid-1980s, 98% of arrowroot starch production came from tropical regions such as the West Indies, South America, and Australia.
And, in 1984, maranta rhizomes were grown in Tifton, Georgia, with comparable starch content to those grown in the West Indies.
So that is the food fact for today!
