Hello, I am Dr. Jun from ๐ฉโโ๏ธ, and I would like to share a short story not only about an elderly patient I attended to but also about the silently struggling caretaker, who happens to be the patientโs daughter.
I was assigned to visit Madam Liew, a 78-year-old lady who had suffered a major stroke and was currently bedridden, relying on a feeding tube for nutrition. Her only caretaker is her daughter๐ฉ, who is a single mother of 3๐ฆ๐ง, working a 9 to 5 job, and is always running here and there, squeezing time out to care for her sick and bedridden mother.
Madam Liewโs feeding tube was dislodged in the morning, likely pulled out by herself, as many other patients find it uncomfortable. This is a case our homecare team commonly encounters. She had also taken an emergency leave from work, settled her kids at school, and was finally referred to by one of her colleagues.
I proceeded with my examination of Mdm Liew, followed by the requested medical procedure๐ฉบ, and after 30 minutes, Mdm Liew had a new silicone feeding tube in place and was ready to feed again.
"Aunty, you must be hungry already. No milk since morning! After this, don't pull out the tube anymore, okay?๐" I said to Mdm Liew, to which she gave a tiny cheeky smileโบ๏ธ๐.
Before leaving the house, I spent a few minutes with the daughter. She told me a long story about how her mom got sick๐ค, the frequent hospital visits๐ฅ, the medical expenses๐ธ, medications๐, basically everything and anything about the care of her bedridden elderly mother.
I listened and nodded. She had certainly gone through immense struggles and challenges and was still holding on with strength and courage for the sake of her sick mother and her young children.

All I could offer at that moment was a moment of silence, followed by a gentle pat on her shoulder and some words of comfort and encouragement. But I am glad that today, our homecare team can provide daily support to Mdm Liew and her daughterโจ. With daily visits from our nurse, Mdm Liew is receiving professional nursing care every day, along with timely feeding tube changes, urine tube changes, and bedsore treatments.
This has definitely lifted a huge burden off her daughterโs shoulders. Mdm Liew is well, receiving professional nursing care daily, and her unsung hero of a daughter can now have an improved quality of life๐
