Dr. Yau is a paediatrician that provides medical care to babies and children in Batu Pahat, Johor. He operates a paediatric clinic at Hospital Pantai Batu Pahat, serving the residents around Yong Peng, Muar, Kluang, Ayer Hitam and Simpang Renggam. Dr. Yau completed his medical degree from International Medical University (IMU) in the year 2005. He has more than 15 years of medical experience servi

ng at Hospital Besar Melaka before ventured out to the private practice. Due to his passion and vast clinical experience, he successfully attained his MRCPCH from Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK) in the year 2011. Dr. Yau has special interest and passion in diagnosing and treatment of various child health issues, as well as giving advice and guidance to the parents on early prevention of childhood illnesses. He also enjoys communicating and educating parents in promoting a healthy lifestyle for their children. Dr. Yau is a father of two lovely princesses who reminds him that children’s mental and physical health begins at home. He believes that proper parenting skills are essential for a children’s growth and developmental journey in life. Childhood Eczema 儿童湿疹

I had priviledged to meet this lovely boy last week. He was brought to see me with severe Eczema that caused much discomfort and inability to sleep at night because of the ithcyness . With treatment, his condition improved within days ( as shown in the photos). I am thankfull that he is well and happy now.

Childhood eczema is a common skin problem that usually starts in babies or young children. It makes the skin dry, red, itchy, and sometimes cracked. It often shows up on the cheeks, arms, or legs. Eczema can get worse with things like dust, heat, certain soaps, or foods. It can run in families, especially if parents have eczema, asthma, or allergies.

To help, keep the skin moist with creams, avoid things that make it worse, and use special creams from the doctor if needed. Many children get better as they grow older, but some may still have flare-ups later.

儿童湿疹是一种常见的皮肤问题，通常在婴儿或幼儿时期开始。它会让皮肤变得干燥、发红、发痒，有时还会裂开。湿疹常出现在脸颊、手臂或腿上。灰尘、热、某些肥皂或食物等因素可能会让湿疹更严重。如果家里有人有湿疹、哮喘或过敏，孩子患湿疹的几率也会更高。护理方面要经常给皮肤涂保湿霜，避免让症状加重的因素，并在医生指导下使用药膏。很多孩子随着长大湿疹会好转，但有些人长大后还会偶尔复发。

What is Umbilical knot?? Why it is important to learn about it?

Today, i received one lovely baby delivered via an emergency caeserian section. After careful newborn examination, i noticed with horror that the baby’s umbilical cord has a tight knot 😳. Luckily, all turns out well for the baby.

An umbilical knot is a rare but potentially serious condition occurring in approximately 1-2% of pregnancies.

A true knot forms when the fetus moves through a loop in the umbilical cord, often due to excessive fetal movement, particularly in mid-pregnancy when amniotic fluid volume is high relative to fetal size.

Risk factors to get umbilical knot are:

1. Long umbilical cord(Increases the likelihood of looping)
2. Polyhydramnios / excess amniotic fluid (Allows more fetal mobility)
3. Multifetal pregnancies(Twins or multiples may increase cord entanglement)

‘Loose Knots’ are often asymptomatic, causing no harm to the fetus.

‘Tight Knots’ can compress blood vessels reducing oxygen and nutrient supply to baby. This will lead to Fetal growth restriction, oxygen
deprivation and in severe cases, can lead to stillbirth.

Detection via ultrasound is challenging but possible, especially with Doppler imaging.

During process of delivery, close surveillance if a knot is suspected. Continuous fetal monitoring during labor. Emergency cesarean delivery may be needed if fetal distress (e.g., abnormal heart rate) occurs due to tightening of the knot.

Most true knots remain loose and cause no complications. But, Tight knots correlate with higher rates of adverse outcomes, including stillbirth (4-10% of unexplained stillbirths involve true knots).
