Open letter to Media Professionals and Content Creators: Be mindful of unintentional harm of the Werther effect - A call for responsible journalism and content creation.
Dear media professionals and content creators,
Of recent, there have been too many tragic deaths involving young people in schools which seems to suggest the phenomenon of copycat su***de, also known as the "Werther effect”.
What is the Werther effect and what has this got to do with the media?
The Werther effect is an imitative effect via social learning, whereby a vulnerable person relates or identifies with another person who has died by su***de and copies their behaviour”.
Media content, especially news coverage and its portrayal of mental health related issues can play an important role in influencing public opinion on mental health and su***de prevention matters.
Research evidence has shown that certain representations of suicidal behaviours in the media can potentially cause a negative impact such as the Werther effect. Harmful content which increase Werther effects include detailed descriptions of su***de methods, location, personal identifying information of the deceased, or speculations on a simplistic single cause leading to the suicidal death.
On the other hand, media stories can confer a protective effect known as the ‘Papageno effect’ to prevent su***des by focussing on help-seeking and non-su***de alternatives to crisis.
We strongly urge all journalists and media content creators to exercise caution when reporting, commenting or creating content on su***de related matters as individuals with greater vulnerability may be at risk of copying.
Please do adhere strictly to World Health Organization's (WHO) Su***de Prevention: Resources for Media Professionals when reporting su***de news to reduce possible negative effects, especially among young people. https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/372691/9789240076846-eng.pdf?sequence=1
For filmmakers and other working on stage and screen, please refer to this resource: https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/328774/WHO-MSD-MER-19.4-eng.pdf?sequence=1
Please consider – as media professionals and content creators, your work and what you do matters. Apart from ethical and responsible dissemination of information, you can do your part by spreading the Papageno effect to save lives.
