3 Dairy Foods To Try if You Have Diabetes

If you are one of those millions of people living with type 2 diabetes, you likely understand that it can be challenging to determine which foods are beneficial and which should be avoided. Dairy, in particular, is one food group that many members have discussed on DiabetesTeam. What role could dairy play in your diabetes diet?

Some DiabetesTeam members have reduced their dairy intake or stopped consuming it entirely, like one who wrote, “Some foods I avoid due to lactose intolerance and my cholesterol, like cheese and milk.” Others, however, have noted the positive effects dairy products have had on their diet: “Fat makes us feel fuller,” wrote one member, “and since it takes a long time to digest, you also feel fuller longer. That is true with any type of fat, but especially if you opt for either the unsaturated fats or higher-fat dairy products, including the full-fat yogurt.”

Whether you love cheese and milk or prefer nondairy alternatives, read on to see how consuming three different forms of dairy products may positively affect diabetes management and boost your overall well-being. As always, talk to your doctor or a specialist like a registered nutritionist about healthy eating before making changes to your diet or food choices.

1 TRACE MINERAL Combats Insulin Resistance, Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease

Zinc is a nutrient that people need to stay healthy. Zinc is found in cells throughout the body. It helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses. The body also needs zinc to make proteins and DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Zinc also helps wounds heal and is important for the proper senses of taste and smell.

How zinc is related to insulin?
Since Zn plays a clear role in the synthesis, storage, and secretion of insulin as well as the conformational integrity of insulin in the hexametric form, the decreased Zn, which affects the ability of the islet cell to produce and secrete insulin, might then compound the problem, particularly in Type 2 diabetes.

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with age, obesity, and lack of physical activity. Insulin resistance is a fundamental aspect of the etiology of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance has been shown to be associated with atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, hyperuricemia, hypertension, and polycystic o***y syndrome. The mineral zinc plays a key role in the synthesis and action of insulin, both physiologically and in diabetes mellitus. Zinc seems to stimulate insulin action and insulin receptor tyrosine kinase activity.

TYPE 2 DIABETES OVERVIEW

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease in which your body is unable to regulate the levels of glucose, a type of sugar, in your blood. Type 2 diabetes usually progresses over time and can lead to many serious complications. Type 2 diabetes can be treated with medication and lifestyle changes such as weight loss, exercise, and diet changes. In some early cases of type 2 diabetes, the disease can be reversed. Symptoms vary among people with type 2 diabetes, but common symptoms include intense hunger and thirst, fatigue, frequent urination, blurry vision, irritability, slowed healing, numbness or tingling in the extremities, and frequent yeast infections.

What Is Diabetes?
When you eat, your body converts carbohydrates (found in grains, potatoes, fruit, vegetables, dairy, beans, and sweets) into glucose, a form of sugar the body needs for fuel. Glucose is carried to every cell in the body by the bloodstream. The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin. Insulin is necessary to allow cells to take in glucose from the bloodstream and regulate how much glucose remains in your blood.

In the early stage of type 2 diabetes, the cells of the body become less sensitive to insulin; this stage is called insulin resistance. At first, the pancreas compensates by making more insulin. However, over time, insulin resistance grows, and the pancreas cannot make enough insulin. Cells can no longer take in the glucose and begin to starve. Blood sugar levels rise, causing damage to nerves, blood vessels, and organs. The higher blood glucose levels are, and the longer they remain high, the more damage they do.

What Causes Diabetes?
Some people are more likely than others to develop type 2 diabetes based on the genes they inherited from their parents. For instance, people with a family history of diabetes and people with African, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander ancestry have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Age is another factor, with type 2 diabetes being most common among those 45 and older. However, lifestyle and health factors play a major role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Being overweight or obese and not getting enough physical activity are important factors that raise the risk for type 2 diabetes.

GAMBARAN KESELURUHAN DIABETES JENIS 2
