Easier to amputate than to save the toes?

It takes only few seconds to amputate the 5th toe but it takes around 50-100 clinical hours to be able to save the toe and foot from amputation. Depending on the needs of the patient and lifestyle he has to face, patients and family has to decide the best options available with their doctors or surgeon.

Options should be given very clearly to both patients and family or care takers on both options and the best should apply.

Why is it important to save the 5th toe?

5th toe amputation or the Ray amputation of the 5th toe commonly leads to structural deformity and biomechanics alteration of the affected foot further risking patients to develop pressure related ulcers or wounds in near future. Risking the whole foot again towards the danger of infection and major limb amputations. The foot as seems to slowly invert internally causing more pressure points to build up in a numb Neuropathic limb once the classical Ray of the 5th toe is performed under certain circumstances depending on the various clinical condition and indications.

Below is an example of a diabetic foot wound involving the 5th toe and managed by MediAsia Advance Wound Dressing & Tissue Repair Center team.
