A high-quality diet during youth and middle age may help maintain brain function in senior years, according to a study with over 3,000 participants tracked for nearly seven decades. Diets high in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains were considered higher in quality. Research shows that diets rich in plant-based foods and phytonutrients can reduce oxidative stress and improve blood flow to the brain. Participants with higher diet quality typically had better cognitive performance and lower dementia rates at age 68 – 70.
