Exploring factors influencing the uptake of kangaroo mother care: key informant interviews with parents.

This is a new publication on the perspectives of parents on Kangaroo Mother Care practices in Malaysia. Thank you to all parents and healthcare staff who were involved in this study.

This study has shed light on the challenges and opportunities for KMC to be a routine practice for all infants, through the eyes of the parents. In line with the updated World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, this study explores why KMC, particularly for preterm infants, faces challenges in uptake and sustainability.

Using the Triandis model of social behavior, this study reveals that positive emotions, a sense of parenthood, and the benefits of KMC are facilitating factors for its uptake. Conversely, lack of awareness, initial negative feelings, time constraints, overcrowding, privacy issues, limited visiting hours, lack of support, and communication gaps are major barriers.

Since most parents who practice KMC with their babies feel happy and that KMC indeed helps their babies, any hindrance to the practice should be minimised so that more babies can get the care they need.
