Pharmacy is the branch of health sciences dealing with the preparation, assuring quality, dispensing, proper utilization of medicines and delivering pharmaceutical care. Pharmaceutical care is the responsible provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve and maintain a patient’s quality of life. Pharmacists are in high demand, attracting amongst the highest paid upon graduation and registration. The current pharmacist-population ratio in Malaysia is about 1: 2500. The 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy Programme will train undergraduates in basic medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences and patient-focussed sciences as well as pharmacy practice areas. Skills required of a pharmacist will be acquired via lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, problem-based learning and clinical clerkship as well attachment to practice areas such as community pharmacy, industry pharmacy and hospitals. In hospitals the pharmacist’s role includes patient-based clinical services. On successful completion of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) Programme, you need to undergo a one-year housemanship, pass a pharmacy law examination before being registered as a pharmacist and given an annual practicing licence. You are also required to complete 1 year compulsory service with the government. A registered pharmacist practice mainly in academia, research, hospitals, community pharmacies, the pharmaceutical industry, the military and the veterinary industry. The pharmacist can specialize in many areas such as Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutical Operations, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.
