GETTING A DIAGNOSIS
Proper differential diagnosis between the types of Dementia will require, at least, referral to a specialist, e.g; a geriatric internist, geriatric psychiatrist, neurologist, neuropsychologist or geropsychologist. Duration of symptoms must normally exceed six months for a diagnosis of dementia or organic brain syndrome to be made. The "gold standard" for diagnosing dementia, autopsy, does not help the patient or caregivers. Therefore, doctors have devised a number of techniques to help identify dementia with reasonable accuracy while the patient is still alive.
