Have you ever heard of Thalassemia?
Many people think it’s the same as lower level of red blood cell, but actually it’s very different — and can be much more serious.
🩸 What is Thalassemia?
It’s a sickness you are born with, passed down from parents.
Because of a problem in the blood, your red blood cells break down too fast,
and your body doesn’t have enough healthy ones → this causes tiredness and pale skin.
👨👩👧 How it runs in families
If both parents carry the gene, the child may have serious thalassemia.
If only one parent carries it, the child may have very mild symptoms, or no symptoms at all.
⚠️ What signs can it cause?
Mild cases: sometimes no symptoms, or just a little bit of tiredness.
Serious cases: very pale face, always tired, slow growth in children, big belly from swollen organs, and often need regular blood transfusions.
💡 Can it be prevented or treated?
Prevention: Couples can do a simple blood test before marriage or pregnancy to see if they carry the gene.
Treatment:
Mild cases usually don’t need treatment.
Serious cases may need regular blood transfusions, medicine to remove extra iron, and vitamins.
The only possible cure right now is a bone marrow transplant.
👉 Early screening and prevention are the best ways to protect your family’s health.
