With September drawing to a close, we mark the conclusion of our dedicated focus on raising awareness for PCOS.
PCOS is a common hormonal disorder in women, with a diverse range of symptoms like irregular periods, infertility, and weight issues.
Diagnosis in adults requires meeting two of three criteria: high androgen levels, ovulatory dysfunction, or polycystic ovaries/ elevated AMH.
However, consensus noticed that many do not meet the diagnostic criteria, so can labeled them as ‘increased risk’ of PCOS and follow them up for reassessment, especially for those within 8 years post menarche.
While the exact cause is unknown, genetics and lifestyle are factors. Management should be focusing on lifestyle changes and addressing individual symptoms (reproductive, metabolic, psychological).
It‘s crucial to consult a gynecologist for an accurate diagnosis—to rule out similar conditions—and a personalized treatment plan, as effective control of symptoms and long-term risks is achievable.
