Please take note there is a recall of all pholcodine-containing medicines from the Malaysian market.
As you may be aware, the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) made the decision to recall these medicines yesterday, March 20.

In September last year (2022), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) commenced a review of medicines containing pholcodine to assess the possible association with rare but serious anaphylactic reactions to certain medicines called neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) used in anaesthesia.

The EMA review was prompted by results from a recent French study (the ALPHO study) that compared pholcodine exposure in patients that had NMBA-related anaphylactic reactions in anaesthesia compared to those patients that did not have NMBA-related anaphylactic reactions.
Data from the ALPHO study indicates that the use of pholcodine in the 12 months leading up to anaesthesia using NMBAs slightly increases the risk of developing an anaphylactic reaction, noting that the risk of anaphylactic reactions to NMBAs during anaesthesia is already very low.
