Usually, most people who come for postural assessment arrive with pain or some form of physical functionality challenge. It’s quite rare to meet someone who come without any real complaint.
Yesterday was different.
A middle-aged woman came in, well-aligned and impressively centered and there was no obvious discomfort in her body. Naturally, I asked her, “What brought you here?”
Her answer to me was indeed very wise.
She shared that she had just upgraded into becoming a mother-in-law and hopefully soon, a grandmother. Then she said, “久病无孝子” (prolonged illness can break filial piety).
She wasn’t here because something was wrong. She was here because she wanted to stay well so that she didn’t have to become a burden to her son or his new family. Instead, she chooses to take responsibility for her own health, and she said "spine is very important.
It strikes me that this is a shift in how we understand parental love.
Perhaps today, loving our children is no longer about sacrificing our health for them but about caring for ourselves so we can remain independent, dignified, and present in good shape in their lives.
Maybe this is the parenting trend now.
