Let's talk about asthma - Do you still only use your blue inhaler?

Many people thought that their asthma were actually under controlled. However, according to a study published in 2020, only less than 50% of asthmatic patients have well controlled asthma.

One common misconception is that when your asthma is well controlled with your blue inhaler (Ventolin), you are ok. No, you are not ok! This is because your blue inhaler only helps to open up your airway but it does nothing to solve the underlying lung inflammation. As a result, your asthma may become worsen and more severe and your lung will become weaker.

As of 23/7/2021 (4.40 pm), KKM and MDA has given a conditioner approval for only THREE (3) brand of self test COVID-19 test kits which are:

𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜: 𝐑𝐞-𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐞

Ever wondering why the doctors and pharmacists in hospital/klinik kesihatan/community pharmacy disallow the repetitive usage of insulin pen needle? We have got you covered in today's topic: Re-using insulin pen needle

All insulin pen needles are designed to be of 𝐎𝐍𝐄 (𝟏) time use only but why? There are a few reasons to it. Before we go into each of the specific reason, you can have a look on the picture attached first.

As you can see, the new needle is very smooth and sharp. Sharp needle can pe*****te our skin easily into our fat layer and hence less painful. However, after using, the needle can become blunt and this creates a few issues:
𝟏. 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Blunt needles are harder to pe*****te our skin and hence create more pain. Just imagine injecting using the needle that have been used 3 times (look at the picture and imagine), OMG it will be extremely painful

𝟐. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
All new needles are sterile and free from any bacteria, virus etc. However, after injecting once, bacteria can get transferred into the needle. When you use the sane needle to inject again, there will be chance that you are also introducing bacteria into the skin

𝟑. 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞
Re-using pen needle can cause insulin in barrel to crystalize, blocking its flow in next injection. That is also the reason why many patients having uncontrolled sugar level

𝟒. 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲
Lipohyperthrophy is condition when there is lipid lump building up in the injection site. This lipid lump reduce the absorption of insulin, causing uncontrolled blood sugar level. Re-using insulin needle will cause more trauma to the skin and hence higher risk of forming lipid lump.

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims and healthy Muslims are required to fast from sunup to sundown for 29-30 days. Although individuals with chronic diseases including diabetes are exempted from fasting if their condition is severe, most patients still observe the practice of fasting. Hence, it is vital to understand the risk of fasting in diabetes and what to do in case of emergency during this Ramadan month. Let’s have a look on today’s topic: Puasa for diabetic – Boleh tak saya puasa?

There are basically 4 risks that every Muslim (or every individuals) need to know, which are:
1. Hypoglycemia (rate is 1.6x higher during Ramadan)
2. Hyperglycemia (High sugar level)
3. Diabetic ketoacidosis (dangerous complication)
4. Dehydration (less water intake with high physical activity)

So let us tackle the risk one by one and know how to solve them!

𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐲𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚
Hypoglycemia occurred when we have low sugar level. While high sugar level is not healthy, low sugar level is dangerous as well as it can lead to various complication like fall and coma! Recognizing the symptoms of hypoglycemia are important and the symptoms can include 𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐭, 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 and many more. So, what can you do if this occur?

1. Break fast and immediately take some simple sugar (Glucolin, half glass of fruit juice, 1 tablespoon of honey)
2. Wait 15 minutes and see if symptoms are still present. Check with blood sugar machine if got
3. If the reading is still 𝟏𝟔.𝟕, break fast and drink water immediately. Visiting health care professional is recommended for dose adjustment of medication

SMBG is recommended to detect any incidence of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Finger pricking SMBG will not break fast and hence all patients are advised to continue to monitor their sugar level as recommended for better management of diabetes
