Microbiology Monday: In the early 1900s, Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin developed Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) by passing a virulent strain of Mycobacterium bovis—the bacterium that causes bovine tuberculosis—over 230 times, creating a non-virulent version. Decades later, it was discovered that BCG effectively treats non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and has been the standard therapy for over 30 years. When introduced into the bladder via catheter, BCG enters cancer cells and kills them by triggering cell cycle arrest, among other mechanisms. However, 30-50% of patients do not respond to the treatment. The reasons for this resistance are still unclear, though the bladder microbiome may play a role.
