Is my baby's p**p normal? 🤔

💩 Baby's first p**p: Meconium
Did you notice greenish-black p**p when you changed your newborn's diaper for the first time? That's meconium, a sticky, tar-like substance that gradually filled your baby's intestines during his/her stay in your uterus. Though it may look unsettling, it's completely normal. In fact, that the meconium is in the diaper instead of in the intestines is a good sign — now you know that your baby’s bowels are doing their job.

💩 Transitional stools
Sometime after the first 24 hours, when all the meconium has passed, you'll see transitional stools, which are dark, greenish-yellow and loose, sometimes "seedy" in texture (particularly among breastfed infants). They may occasionally contain mucus or even traces of blood in them, probably the result of your baby swallowing some blood during delivery. (Just to be sure, save any diaper containing blood to show to a nurse or doctor.)

After three or four days of transitional stools, the type of milk (breast milk / infant formula milk) that your baby is taking will determine the color and consistency of her p**p — although this can change from day to day and from bowel movement to bowel movement, causing even experienced parents to scratch their heads.

There is a variety of colours and textures when it comes to baby p**p and most of them are normal. Some baby will poo every time they feed and others may go a few days without one. This depends on their age, whether they are breastfed or formula-fed, and if they have started on solids.

If you have concerns about your baby’s health, speak to your doctor or child health nurse.
