*Strength in the Heights: Elevating Kinabalu Park's Emergency Preparedness*

A major step forward in wilderness emergency care has begun on Mount Kinabalu. In a collaborative effort led by the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) — together with Sabah Parks, the Wilderness and Austere Medicine Society Malaysia (WAMS), the Wilderness Medicine Special Interest Group (MyCEP), and the Emergency and Trauma Department, Hospital Queen Elizabeth — this initiative aims to enhance emergency medical response in Sabah's high-altitude and remote environments.

The first Wilderness Basic Life Support (WBLS) course was successfully conducted on 5 November 2025 at Kinabalu Park, attended by 30 participants, including park officers, mountain guides, rangers, and lifeguards. The training focused on essential life-saving techniques, including CPR, hypothermia management, high-altitude illness, and common injuries encountered by climbers.

This marks the start of a structured wilderness medicine program that will continue with Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Advanced First Aid, and Wilderness First Responder courses — progressively building capacity and competence among Sabah Parks personnel operating in challenging terrains far from hospital facilities.

Supported by ongoing research, the development of teleconsultation, and technology integration from UMS, this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to safety, innovation, and preparedness at Malaysia's most iconic natural heritage site.

🌟 Successful Completion of the Rural Point-of-Care Ultrasound (R-POCUS) Course 2025 🌟

We are delighted to share the success of the R-POCUS Course for Final-Year Undergraduate Medical Students, held on 9–10 September 2025 at the Clinical Simulation Laboratory, FPSK UMS.

This course was jointly organised by the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK) UMS, together with Hospital UMS (HUMS).

✨ A total of 60 final-year medical students benefitted from this initiative, which was specially designed to equip them with essential ultrasound skills for use in rural and district hospitals.

Over two meaningful days, students had the opportunity to:
🔹 Join interactive lectures on eFAST, lung, cardiac, vascular, abdominal, and obstetric POCUS.
🔹 Engage in small-group, hands-on sessions with real-time guidance from our dedicated facilitators.
🔹 Rotate through skill stations focusing on practical applications, boosting both their confidence and competence.

We are deeply grateful to all our faculty members, facilitators, staff, and students for their commitment, hard work, and positive energy. 🌸 Special appreciation goes to VIM Medical Sdn Bhd for generously sponsoring Mindray ultrasound machines, which greatly enhanced the learning experience.

🌱 Looking ahead, we aspire to:
✨ Establish R-POCUS as an annual programme for final-year medical students.
✨ Integrate POCUS into the Medical Doctor Programme curriculum at UMS.
✨ Develop the Sono Academy UMS, a dedicated platform for advancing ultrasound education.

With everyone’s continued support, we believe these steps will strengthen our mission of preparing graduates to serve effectively in rural and resource-limited healthcare settings. 💪🏽🏥

STRENGTHENING DISASTER RESILIENCE: DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE VISITS NDRC UMS

On Thursday, 24 July 2025, the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) conducted a courtesy and collaboration visit to the Natural Disaster Research Centre (NDRC), UMS. The visit aimed to explore strategic partnerships in disaster preparedness, response, and community education.

The Emergency Medicine team was represented by Dr Abdullah Lutfi bin Ismail (Head of Department), Associate Professor Dr Mohamad Hamim bin Mohamad Hanifah, and Associate Professor Dr Fairrul Kadir. They were warmly received by Associate Professor Dr Carolyn Melissa Payus, Director of NDRC, and Madam Eldawaty binti Madran.

The session began with an insightful presentation by Dr Carolyn, outlining NDRC’s key achievements in disaster research, risk reduction, and community engagement. The centre’s impactful work reflects its vital role as a hub for multidisciplinary disaster-related initiatives at UMS.

Following this, the Emergency Medicine team introduced their departmental functions and special interest in the areas of prehospital care, disaster response, and disaster risk reduction

The discussion yielded several promising areas for collaboration. Among the immediate plans are:
✅ Involvement of the Emergency Medicine team in NDRC’s community education programmes, specifically in delivering Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid Training
✅ Organizing tabletop exercises on disaster management involving agencies across UMS
✅ Long-term efforts to jointly develop disaster response simulations and a UMS-wide disaster protocol

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of sustained collaboration between NDRC and the Department of Emergency Medicine. This partnership is expected to contribute meaningfully toward enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience at both institutional and community levels.

STRENGTHENING WILDERNESS MEDICINE COLLABORATION AT KINABALU NATIONAL PARK

On Tuesday, 22 July 2025, the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of MeMohamedand Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) paid a courtesy and working visit to Tuan Justinus Guntabid, Director of Kinabalu National Park (KNP), at the Taman Negara Kinabalu office, Sabah Parks.

Representing the Emergency Medicine Department were AP Dr Mohamad Hamim bin Mohamad Hanifah and AP Dr Fairrul Kadir. This engagement aimed to initiate collaborative activities under the MoU between UMS and Sabah Parks, and to follow up on outcomes from the Wilderness Medicine Workshop held on 26 June 2025.

The meeting focused on exploring joint efforts in developing Wilderness Medicine services for Kinabalu National Park. Several potential collaborations were discussed, and both parties agreed to begin with three key initiatives:

1️⃣ Wilderness Medicine Training Placement – Emergency Medicine postgraduate trainees from FPSK UMS will undergo wilderness medicine training at KNP, with the programme expected to commence in 2026.
2️⃣ Development of Kinabalu Wilderness and Remote Medicine Services (K-WARMS) – A remote consultation platform to support park personnel, developed and coordinated by the Emergency Medicine Department.
3️⃣ Wilderness BLS and First Aid Training – Specialised courses for KNP personnel in partnership with the Wilderness and Austere Medicine Society Malaysia (WAMS).

The discussion was highly productive, laying a strong foundation for impactful and sustainable collaboration. The Department of Emergency Medicine extends its appreciation to Tuan Justinus and the Sabah Parks leadership for their warm reception and shared commitment.
