This month marks the annivesary of a milestone at our center. A lung cancer case was referred to us for re-biopsy of her cancer. She has been on targeted therapy but serial scans showed progression with a pleural nodule. Blood sample for T790M was negative. She underwent pneumothorax induction using Veress needle and pleuroscopy was performed. Pleural biopsy of her pleural nodule was positive for T790M. She required chest tube drainage and was discharged the next day. The first of its kind procedure was first performed in this center 1 year ago.

Pleural Tuberculosis diagnosed using pleuroscopy. Result was available within a few hours using biopsy specimen nucleic acid amplification test for mycobacterium. Conventional method of waiting for histopathology report and AFB stain takes a few days and not always confirmatory. Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu is the first medical center in Sabah that offers this test on biopsy specimen.

Empyema and complicated parapneumonic effusion are conditions involving infected fluid gathering between the lung and the chest wall (the pleural space).

They are treated by draining the fluid with a tube inserted through the chest into the fluid (a 'chest tube), along with antibiotics. If this does not work, then surgery is usually needed to drain the fluid. Fibrinolytic drugs ('clot-busting drugs') may make the infected pleural fluid thinner, less sticky and easier to drain via a chest tube, meaning that surgery may not be needed.

The treatment called intra-pleural fibrinolytic therapy is ONLY available in Gleneagles, KK Sabah.

2nd ECG Workshop by Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu
