๐Ÿค STILL HERE: PORTRAITS OF PRESENCE ๐Ÿค

A meaningful collaboration between Palliative Care Association of Sabah (PCAKK) and Ultramarine, presented by Melanie Chin & Jeremy Wong, featuring photography works by Henry Liew.

Yesterday evening, PCAKK had the honour of attending the private launch of this immersive photography exhibition exploring presence, honouring daily life, quiet resilience, companionship, and dignity.

Featuring portraits of PCAKK patients, the exhibition reminds us that every story deserves to be seen, honoured, and remembered. We were also deeply touched to have some of the patientsโ€™ family members present during the exhibition launch evening.

We are deeply grateful to everyone involved in bringing this heartfelt collaboration to life and for creating a space that celebrates humanity with compassion and respect.

๐Ÿ“ Ultramarine, Kota Kinabalu
๐Ÿ“… Exhibition Period: 8 May โ€“ 8 August 2026
๐Ÿ•› Open Daily: 12:00 PM โ€“ 10:00 PM
๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Entry Fee: RM35

A portion of all proceeds from the exhibition will be donated back to PCAKK in support of our ongoing work in providing compassionate care, dignity, and support to patients and families.

๐Ÿ’œ PCA Volunteers in Action! ๐Ÿ’œ

Some of our dedicated PCA volunteers gathered this morning for a briefing ahead of the Borneo Marathon 2026 ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธโœจ

On the day, weโ€™ll be proudly wearing purple as we stand together with PCA patients and caregiversโ€”running not just for fitness, but for awareness, support, and unity.

The run will take place on 10th May 2026 (Sunday) at Stadium Likas, starting as early as 5:00 AM.

A big thank you to Borneo International Marathon for the kind invitation and for giving us this opportunity to be part of such an inspiring event ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’œ

"Doctor, what's the difference between palliative care and hospice care?"

I get this question asked a lot of times. Not just by my patients. Often times their family members, my own colleagues in different fields, my own family members and friends. I get asked this question almost every time during radio, TV and newspaper interviews.

It does not get easier with a lot of articles (usually originating from specific countries) entitled palliative care vs hospice care.

I'll explain to you about what these questions mean in our Malaysian context. Many countries also follow the same concept.

Let's get the first thing right. If the word 'versus' is part of your question, you're asking the wrong question. That's why this concept is very difficult to grasp.

The right way to explain it is how can this two work together for you?
palliative care is a branch of medicine where the approach is to improve your quality of life when you are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. It helps you and your family cope with the multidimensional issues related to care, be it physical, psychosocial and spiritual. We help to address these issues after a careful assessment.

Our work prioritises comfort. We help to alleviate symptoms - whatever it may be. We also help you and your family make sense of the changing reality when facing serious illnesses.

Palliative care can be provided by a multidisciplinary team in a hospital that helps to address many different issues affecting a person affected by serious illness. Often, patients' ability to function reduces and they become unable to come to the hospital very often.

Remember that hospitals are not built for long-term care. Even if we do, most patients do not feel hospital stay aligns with their wishes when it comes to care.

Our hospices work by having a multidisciplinary community team. These organisations help to deliver palliative care in the community by arranging regular, scheduled visits.

Where an area is not readily serviced by an NGO Hospice, Ministry of Health domiciliary programs have begun to step up to provide this care too.

Here are some important things to remember:
1๏ธโƒฃ You don't have to choose one or the other. Most of the time, the hospital and hospice team will try to work together to align care with your wishes.

2๏ธโƒฃ Receiving these teams to deliver care does not come with a predicted survival time. No one has to decide your expected survival is within a certain period of time. The referring doctor just need to be clear that your disease is life-threatening and curative options are difficult/limited.

3๏ธโƒฃ If you need to be hospitalised for appropriate reasons/interventions, this can still be arranged. You can even still be on chemotherapy or other treatment.

and are not about giving up hope. It's about aligning those hopes with your wishes and the reality of your condition. It's about caring for a person whilst maintaining dignity and comfort.

โ€œA childโ€™s laughter, even in illness, reminds us why compassionate care matters most.โ€ ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

In every home visit, we are reminded that care goes beyond medicineโ€”it is about presence, comfort, and preserving the little moments that mean everything. Each visit is a step in bringing dignity, warmth, and support closer to those who need it most.

Thank you to everyone who continues supporting our mission in bringing healthcare and hope closer to the community. ๐Ÿ’™

โœจ Study Visit at PCAKK โœจ

Today, we were pleased to welcome trainees from the Advanced Diploma in Gerontological Nursing (September 2025 intake) from ILKKM Kota Kinabalu for a meaningful study visit at PCAKK.

A total of 17 participants, including students and their lecturer, joined us for an insightful session led by Nurse Dayang, who shared valuable knowledge and experiences in palliative care.

We hope this visit has provided a deeper understanding and inspiration in caring for the elderly and those in need of compassionate support. ๐Ÿ’›

Thank you for choosing PCAKK as part of your learning journey.
