What is patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS)?

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), also known as runner's knee, means that you have pain in front of the knee or around the kneecap (patella). This is where the knee connects with the lower end of the thighbone (femur).

may be caused by a structural defect, or a certain way of walking or running. Other causes may include:

🏃‍♂️Malalignment of the kneecap

🏃‍♂️Excessive training or overuse

🏃‍♂️Injury or trauma

🏃‍♂️Weak thigh muscles

🏃‍♂️Tight hamstrings

🏃‍♂️Tight Achilles tendons

🏃‍♂️Poor foot support

🏃‍♂️Walking or running with the feet rolling in while the thigh muscles pull the kneecap outward

The most common symptoms of runner's knee:

🌻Pain in and around the kneecap that happens when you are active.

🌻Pain after sitting for a long time with the knees bent. This sometimes causes weakness or feelings of instability.

🌻Rubbing, grinding, or clicking sound of the kneecap that you hear or feel when you bend and straighten your knee

🌻Kneecap that is tender to the touch

The best course of treatment is to stop running until you can run again without pain. Treatment is aimed at relieving pain and increasing strength and range of motion. Treatments may include:

🦾Strengthening exercises

🦾Stretching exercises

🦾Cold packs

🦾Elevating the leg

🦾Compression knee wrap

How Can I Prevent Runner's Knee?

💀Keep your thigh muscles strong and limber with regular exercise.
💀Use shoe inserts if you have problems that may lead to runner's knee.
💀Make sure your shoes have enough support.
💀Try not to run on hard surfaces, like concrete.
💀Stay in shape and keep a healthy weight.
💀Warm up before you work out.
💀Don’t make sudden workout changes like adding squats or lunges. Add intense moves slowly.

Haglund’s Deformity

Haglund’s deformity is sometimes called a “pump bump” because it’s especially painful to wear shoes like pumps (high heels) that have tight backs.

What’s Haglund’s deformity ? It is a bony growth on your heel bone (calcaneus) where your Achilles tendon attaches. The growth causes a bump you can see and feel through your skin. It can cause heel pain, especially when you wear shoes that press tightly against the back of your heel. Over time, pressure and irritation on the growth can cause other conditions in your heel and feet, including Achilles tendinitis and heel bursitis.

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms of Haglund’s deformity include:
~Heel pain.
~A bump on the back of your heel that you can see and feel.
~Swelling.
~Skin discoloration around the bump.
~Haglund’s deformity almost always develops on both feet (bilaterally).

What causes Haglund’s deformity?

Studies have found that it might be genetically inherited (passed down through generations of a biological family).

Other causes might include:

-Irritation and pressure from shoes.
-Overusing your heel (especially in athletes like runners).
-High-arched feet.
-Tight Achilles tendons.
-Certain gait disorders that affect how you move and walk.

Treatment in physiotherapy for Haglund’s deformity

Physical therapy is a beneficial treatment for Haglund's deformity, which is a bony protrusion on the heel. A physical therapist can help with the following:
-Exercises
-A physical therapist can provide stretches and exercises to increase flexibility in the heel and ankle.
Some exercises include:
-Standing heel raises
-Calf stretches
-Heel drops
-Towel scrunches
-Heel cord stretch
-Standing calf stretch or knee-to-wall stretch
-Deep squats with heels flat on the floor
-Downward dog in yoga

Other treatments for Haglund's deformity include:
1. Icing the heel
2. Oral anti-inflammatory medicine
3. Orthotics, such as over-the-counter or custom-made inserts or heel cups
