For many healthcare travellers, the journey doesn’t start with a flight.

It begins with a screen.

A first virtual consultation. Sometimes followed by another, and another — not out of hesitation alone, but because trust is built layer by layer.

In this episode of , , Upper GI Surgeon, takes us into what those early conversations really look like.

Not just diagnosis. But clarity.

Options laid out. Surgical plans mapped. Accommodation arranged. Recovery timelines aligned. Every detail considered before a single step is taken toward Malaysia.

So that by the time they arrive in Kuala Lumpur, nothing feels unknown.

No surprises. No “oops” moments.

Just a plan they already understand — and a journey they’ve already begun.

In the lead-up to Malaysia Healthcare Week Guangzhou this May, discussions continued in Guangzhou through a courtesy visit to the Consulate General of Malaysia, together with Tourism Malaysia Guangzhou, Mr. Radzlan (Consul Tourism) and Mr. Firdaus (Vice Consul Tourism).

The conversation centred on what comes next: how engagements in the Greater Bay Area can be further strengthened through more coordinated on-ground efforts, and how Malaysia Healthcare’s positioning can remain clear and consistent as patient expectations continue to evolve.

This is where alignment between healthcare, tourism, and diplomatic stakeholders becomes important, not as parallel efforts, but as a connected approach to how Malaysia is understood and accessed as a healthcare destination.

MHTC extends its congratulations to Mr. Harris Alwi on his appointment as Consul General in December 2025, and looks forward to continued collaboration with the Consulate General of Malaysia in Guangzhou and Tourism Malaysia in strengthening Malaysia Healthcare’s presence in China.

When an international patient chooses Malaysia, they are placing trust in more than a hospital; they are placing trust in the country and its representation abroad.

MHTC was invited to brief the Heads of Mission under the pre-posting course organised by the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) , ahead of their overseas postings.

Malaysia’s healthcare travel sector is closely connected to its foreign relations. How Malaysia is represented abroad through embassies, high commissions, and diplomatic engagements directly influences how international patients perceive and access Malaysian healthcare.

The session provided an overview of the Malaysia Healthcare ecosystem, including member hospitals, the structure of Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 ( ), the “Healing Meets Hospitality” proposition, and key patient-facing touchpoints that support international travellers throughout their care journey.

It also highlighted a shared reality: each Head of Mission will serve markets with distinct healthcare needs and patient communities, while MHTC continues to act as a coordination point for healthcare-related engagement between Malaysia and overseas stakeholders.

In this context, Malaysia’s diplomatic network forms an extension of the healthcare ecosystem, where enquiries, referrals, and bilateral opportunities often begin outside the hospital setting but ultimately connect back to Malaysia’s healthcare delivery system.

MHTC extends its appreciation to IDFR for the opportunity to contribute to the programme and to the Heads of Mission for their engagement and thoughtful exchange.

As Malaysia advances towards MYMT2026, strengthening alignment between healthcare and diplomacy will remain key in shaping international confidence in Malaysia Healthcare.

To the Heads of Mission embarking on their postings, we wish you a successful and meaningful tour of duty in service of the nation.

Before we knew your name, you were already loved.

From the very first heartbeat, a mother carries more than life, she carries hope, worry, strength, and endless prayers for the days ahead. Through every appointment, every sleepless night, every moment of uncertainty, love quietly grows long before a child ever enters the world.

Then comes the first cry. Tiny fingers wrapped around theirs. A new chapter begins.

From conception to delivery, and through every step after, mothers and mother figures become protectors, comforters, healers, and home. They celebrate our smallest victories, shield us through life’s storms, and continue loving us long after we learn to stand on our own.

Not every mother is biological, but every nurturing hand, guiding presence, and unconditional heart leaves a lasting imprint that shapes who we become.

Happy Mother’s Day ❤️ from all of us at Malaysia Healthcare

Care is felt most in the moments we come together for one another.

Together with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) through the SPM@KongsiKasih initiative featured on Selamat Pagi Malaysia (TV1) and Nasional FM, MHTC spent a meaningful day with orphanages and the asnaf community at Rumah Kasih Harmoni through welfare activities, motivational sharing sessions, and basic health screenings by KPJ Healthcare and IMU Oral Health Centre.

Is wellness the "missing piece" in the patient journey?

At Malaysia Healthcare, we believe the future of care is integrated. Our recent engagement with the AMSPA (Association of Malaysian Spas) highlighted how wellness practices are increasingly spanning the entire patient continuum, from pre-treatment anxiety reduction to post-surgical recovery.

The visit provided valuable exposure to Malaysia’s diverse ecosystem, including traditional Urutan Malaysia, specialised pre-natal and post-natal care, and mind-body-soul experiences. We also explored cutting-edge developments in biohacking, non-invasive regenerative wellness, and post-surgery facial care. This synergy between clinical intervention and holistic support does more than just assist recovery, it fundamentally transforms the patient experience into one that is truly personalised and patient-centered.

Our sincere thanks to AMSPA and the dedicated wellness partners for an insightful day of collaboration. The MHTC delegation was led by our VP of Healthcare, Dr. Sharifa Shahreen Syed Sultan Ahmed.

07/05/2026

Sustained clinical outcomes are a key driver of growing healthcare travel demand, exemplified by Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s 100% success rate in selected cardiac programmes across specialised care.

The hospital is recognised for strengths in orthopaedics and neurology, alongside specialised focus areas in urology, male fertility, and geriatric care. Established capabilities in cardiac care, oncology, and paediatric services further reflect sustained clinical and operational performance across complex care disciplines.

With 29 years of service, the hospital continues to attract international patients from Indonesia and the Middle East, particularly Libya, while strengthening outreach efforts in Cambodia and China. Collectively, these developments reinforce the growing importance of specialised care, clinical credibility, and patient confidence within Malaysia’s healthcare travel ecosystem.

Appreciation is extended to Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Ms. Linda Leong (CEO), Ms. Olivia Chin (Head of Sales & Marketing), and Mr. Leon Low (Manager, International Marketing), for the engaging discussions and perspectives shared.

The MHTC delegation comprised Mr. Suriaghandi Suppiah (CEO), Mr. Lokman Izam Abd Aziz (VP, Marketing & Communications), Ms. Aida Zurina Idris (VP, Data Analytics & Strategy), Dr. Sharifa Shahreen Syed Sultan Ahmed (VP, Healthcare), and Mr. Zairul A Aziz (VP, Administration & Finance).
