💬Language Regression: Is it developmental delay or a sign of language disruption❓
A child who used to speak suddenly becomes quiet and struggles to express themselves...
These changes may not be due to "slow development" or the child being "unwilling to speak,"
but rather something we want to introduce today: 👉 Childhood Aphasia
🧠 What is Childhood Aphasia?
Childhood aphasia is a type of language disorder caused by brain injury or neurological events. Children may:
* Lose previously acquired language comprehension or expression abilities
* Suddenly become unable to speak or understand speech
* Show changes in emotions and reduced social interaction
It usually happens suddenly, and is different from developmental language delay.
🔍 How is it different from Developmental Language Delay?
Developmental Language Delay:
* Language delay can be observed from an early age
* There is no clear brain injury involved
* The child learns language slowly but shows gradual progress
Childhood Aphasia:
* The child previously spoke normally, but after events like brain injury or seizures, suddenly regresses in language
* Usually occurs after a neurological incident or trauma
⚠️ Red Flags Parents Should Watch Out For:
🔺 A child who used to speak fluently suddenly becomes quiet or unwilling to speak
🔺 Difficulty forming or organizing sentences
🔺 Has trouble understanding what others say
🔺 Frequently gives off-topic responses or uses incorrect/mixed-up words
❤️ Here’s What We Want You to Know:
🌱 It’s not that the child “doesn’t want to speak,” but that they may not be able to
🌱 The earlier it is identified, the earlier support and therapy can begin—and the better the outcome
