Good posture starts much earlier than most parents realize — even in the first weeks of life 👼
Supporting your baby’s posture means understanding how their spine develops and what helps (or hinders) that natural process.
The lumbar reflex is a key player in spinal movement and development — it provides the longest leverage point for the spine to arch, forming the foundation of posture and mobility.
During birth, a baby’s spine and skull naturally reorganize to prepare for life outside the womb.
One of the first survival reflexes — the Breast Crawl — relies on a baby’s ability to arch their back, push with their legs, and lift their head to reach the breast.
But when the birth process involves added stress—like forceps, vacuum, long or short labor, C-sections, or restricted movement—these natural reflexes and the baby’s posture may be disrupted.
In C-section births, for example, the baby’s lumbar spine often remains in a fetal position, leading to limited mobility and imbalance. When the lumbar spine stays functional, compensation may show up in the upper thoracic spine and chest instead.
Because every birth is unique, a tailored assessment by a skilled osteopath is essential to detect and correct imbalances early on.
With the right support, we can help ensure your baby develops a strong, balanced posture from the very beginning.
