Recently, there has been media coverage suggesting a possible link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism. We would like to reassure all patients that this scare is not evidence-based.
According to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG):
"The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has published a clear statement on the safety of paracetamol use in pregnancy, stating that there is no confirmed link between taking paracetamol during pregnancy and autism in children."
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) also released a statement reaffirming that guidance has not changed:
"Evidence shows that acetaminophen remains the safe, trusted option for pain relief and treatment of headache and fever during pregnancy. We also shared an FAQ document to help the public understand the facts around acetaminophen use in pregnancy."
Please be assured that both UK and US professional bodies (RCOG & ACOG) continue to support the safe use of paracetamol in pregnancy. Always consult your doctor before starting or stopping any medication.
