At 81, our patient had been struggling with knee pain for years from trying physio, acupuncture and injections with little relief. Climbing stairs became difficult, and surgery felt like the last resort for Mdm Lim Mee Shia.

Encouraged by family and friends who recommended Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Gobinder Singh, she took the leap and chose robotic-assisted knee replacement for both knees at the same time.

"When I woke up, I was already in bed and I was doing the first physio. And by the next day, I was up and walking with a walker and with an es**rt. I was very pleased with my progress because by the fourth day, I can take a shower by myself, wash my hair and everything! By the fifth day, I was very elated because I can do all the things by myself," said Mdm Lim.

"Quite honestly, the most important factor that contributed to her recovery was her own self-determination. The fact that she was determined and she wanted to have a good outcome, she pushed herself to go for physiotherapy to the extent that she got a fantastic early recovery," said Dr Gobinder.

She credits her surgeon and the dedicated care team, including her anesthesiologist, Dr Khairunnadiah, for making her journey smooth and — to her surprise — pain-free.

"A knee replacement surgery is very helpful. The implant we use has been around for many years with excellent results. The added advantage of using the MAKO robotic system is that it allows us to position and balance the implant with great precision. This translates into a more natural feel and excellent outcomes for patients," added Dr Gobinder.

Her message to others suffering from knee pain? “There was no pain at all as I was on medication. I want to reassure other people who have doubts and who are suffering from knee problems. From my own experience, I can tell you that there was no pain and my recovery was quite amazing."
