*Discovery of Novel Exosome-based Biomarkers for Machine-learning Assisted Biosensing in Lung Cancer Screening*

The high mortality rate of lung cancer is due to the advanced stage of diagnosis, highlighting the need for early detection methods. Despite advances in treatment options, the high mortality rate for lung cancer is largely attributed to the advanced stage at diagnosis, underscoring the urgent need for sensitive screening methods for early detection. Currently, low-dose computed tomography (CT)-based screening is the most effective method for early detection but is limited by its high operative cost and false-positive rates. As such, there is an urgent need for a more cost-effective and feasible screening method for lung cancer. With the support of an Impact Oriented Interdisciplinary Research Grant, our team are exploring the potential of biosensors as an alternative approach for lung cancer screening. The team identifies novel lung cancer-associated biomarkers as multiplex detection targets through comparative proteomic analysis of surface proteins on exosomes derived from plasma of lung cancer and lung cancer-free individuals. The interdisciplinary research combines nanobiotechnology, biomarker discovery, and machine learning to develop an affordable screening device for early detection, which could improve early detection rates and reduce the burden of this devastating disease, especially in middle to low-income communities.
