Many parents ask is the Cochlear implant surgery painful? Haha! You can tell from these pictures it is not that painful! This girl had her C I surgery yesterday and she recovers so well from the anaesthesia and so active even after few hours of surgery until the father is wondering if his daughter really had undergone surgery 😆!
Well, it is usually not so painful. Simple analgesia with paracetamol is adequate to control the pain.

Today, our team from ENT Unit, Dept of rehab (audiology and Speech Unit) and nursing working together to organize an event in conjunction with BETTER HEARING &SPEECH MONTH at Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani, Hospital Pakar Kanak-Kanak, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). This month is a time to raise awareness about communication and hearing disorders, and to celebrate the work of speech-language pathologists and audiologists. This awareness started by The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in the year of 1927.
This year's theme is “Empowering Communication, Enhancing Lives”.
Individuals with hearing loss especially children won’t be able to speak well if they can’t hear well! Poor hearing have the impact on communication as well as education and the future lives! Multidisciplinary team work is important and able to help those individuals with hearing impairment to have better speech outcomes and better communication!
Thank you to the hospital management for the support in many ways and also the committee members for the tireless effort to ensure the success of this event!

Today 3 /3 is World Hearing Day! One of the hearing loss child that received cochlear implant at the age of before 1 year old is a live testimonial to all on neuro developmental emergency in paediatric hearing loss. She excel in both academic and co-curriculum! Congratulations to the parents that worked hard on her rehabilitation journey and of course the UKM C I team for the marvellous team work!

Below is the message from WHO:
“This year’s theme builds upon the 2024 focus on changing mindsets towards ear and hearing care. We invite individuals of all ages to empower themselves to ensure healthy ears and hearing for themselves and others, with the theme, "Changing mindsets: empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all!"

By encouraging individuals to recognize the importance of ear and hearing health, this campaign aims to inspire them to change behaviour to protect their hearing from loud sounds and prevent hearing loss, check their hearing regularly, use hearing devices if needed, and support those living with hearing loss. Empowered individuals can drive change within themselves and in society at large. “

This little girl is still my youngest bilateral simultaneous CI in this region. Parents brought her to see me at almost 3 months old with the diagnosis of bilateral profound hearing loss. With the C I team members effort, passion and support plus parents commitment, she underwent bilateral CI surgery when just entering 7 months old on 6/4/2022 successfully with the support from my anaesthetists. She progress so well and currently is age appropriate for the speech and language development!
Early diagnosis, early Intervention is the key for the success, with post op therapy and intensive habilitation by the team are crucial in achieving such outcome!

Consensus statement
A throwback event that worth the post as a few of us had gathered and spent a lot of efforts and time to prepare these consensus statements which were launch recently in early December 2024 when I participated in the 9th ASEAN Academy of Neurotology, Otology & Audiology (AANOA) Congress held in Manila from 6-8 December 2024!
🎤 During this long-awaited regional event, we had an exciting plenary session on "Advocating for Early Intervention in Both Ears Using Smart Technology Together with Therapy." As a proud member of the Emerging Asia Pediatric Hearing Expert Committee, I was honored to moderate the plenary and fireside chat, where we discussed evidence based strategies to improve pediatric hearing care across the region.
✨ The session highlighted the importance of early intervention, bilateral hearing, and the integration of smart technology with therapy, sparking valuable conversations among experts and practitioners dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children with hearing loss.
🙏 A huge thank you to my fellow committee members, the organizers, and the engaged audience who made this session a success. Let’s continue to drive positive change and push the boundaries of pediatric hearing care together! 💛
📸 Check out some snapshots from the session and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
