We love the underwater world of an aquarium, especially in the nature aquarium, as how it’s named , it’s an underwater world with a living eco-system that is designed or decorated to replicate a scene or a scape that you’ve seen in the nature, be it submerged or emerged or hybrid. Completed with soothing, live aquatic plants, driftwood, rocks, and of course livestock (fishes, shrimps, snails..etc) , the nature aquarium is both serene and attractive. Now, one can enjoy the beauty of nature, contained in an aquarium. It’s been a hobby and passion of mine that fulfill my mind during free time, sitting in front of the nature aquarium with a cup of coffee or tea is just another level of mind meditation/therapy for me. Last photo with the bronze colored Myriophyllum roraima in the tank before it is removed. The "Blood vomit" in this tank is also fully grown by now fully showcasing the attractive red base - making it one of the most attractive, but troublesome foreground plants.

Myriophyllum roraima has great color and it is an easy plant to grow, so why remove it ? For background plants, I prefer using species that can trimmed in place (without frequent uprooting) to form nice dense bushes. M. roraima does not branch sufficiently when trimmed, which makes it harder to shape it into a nice bush. You can replant the individual stems each cycle to get the bush to align, but I do not want to waste the effort to do so, especially given how fast it grows. So selecting plants for a layout is not just based on what color/shape and size the plants come in, but also whether they grow in a manner that is easy to manage.

Many aquascapes today prefer to use sand banks for example, rather than having a green carpet - as many aquascapers realize how much effort carpet maintenance takes. (and many folks don't have the proper technique). When planning for a layout, it is smart to have the majority of the layout consist of lower maintenance species - then focused effort can be applied to a few difficult showcase species.

Day 45 update ~

Plants have fully grown in by now, so fast that we haven't had time yet to look for fish to add to the aquarium.

Very pleased with the foreground choices - while the stem plants have needed trimming, most of the foreground has been slow growing and required little work. The elatine triandra is the only weedy plant in the foreground, but it is easy to trim. The Bucephalandra and mini Anubias in the foreground are growing well, and offers good color contrasts to the other plants.

Myriophyllum roraima gains vertical height quickly, but does not branch much from its base. It may be difficult to prune it into a nice dense bush so we may switch it out for something more easy to sculpt.

Java fern "orange narrow" is finally peaking out in the midground. We are excited to see its potential in a high light aquarium.

Top view of the 2ft Lagenandra scape. The lime green of Lysimachia nummularia in the background stands out well against the darker greens of the Lobelia cardinalis and Blood vomit. It matches the light green tone of Elatine triandra at the foreground.

One day I look forward to doing a shallow pond that can offer such top views of aquarium plants.

Adding fish this weekend as the aquarium has reached good maturity by now (about 6 weeks old).
