Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) affects nearly 1 in every 100 babies born, thus making it the most common type of birth defect. Yet, it often goes undetected or misunderstood.

CHD isn’t just one condition. It’s a range of structural heart problems that a person is born with. Some are simple and require little or no treatment. Others are complex, needing multiple surgeries and lifelong care. Without early diagnosis and intervention, CHD can affect development, quality of life, and survival.

But behind every diagnosis is a story of resilience.

From newborns to adults, CHD warriors face extraordinary challenges with strength, hope, and bravery. They deserve more than just awareness; they deserve action, support, and equitable care.
That’s where you can make a difference.

Through our Patient Assistance Programme, we’re working to bridge the gap by providing life-saving treatment and support for underprivileged heart patients who would otherwise go without. Because reducing health inequalities isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s part of our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities.

💙 Let’s give every brave heart the fighting chance they deserve.
🫀 Support CHD awareness. Support equal access to care.

Ahmad Zulkarnain, a 1-year-old from Terengganu, was born with a serious congenital heart condition including PAVSD and PDA in failure. This complex defect makes it difficult for his heart to pump oxygen-rich blood.

His father, 32, is the family’s sole provider, working tirelessly as a laborer. His 27-year-old mother is a full-time housewife dedicated to his care.

From 19 days old, Zulkarnain struggled for every breath, needing intubation twice before he was 3 months old. He battled fevers, a racing heart, and relied on a feeding tube for nourishment. He also depends on an oxygen machine at home.

Recently, he underwent a crucial Mitral Valve Repair to improve blood flow.

His parents have poured their love into his care, but the cost of treatment is beyond their means. Zulkarnain’s story is a heartfelt reminder of how vital timely medical care is for children like him.

Your support can be the lifeline that gives Zulkarnain and many children like him a fighting chance at life. Let’s give them a chance to grow, thrive, and experience the joys of childhood.

Happy World Heart Day!

Celebrating the heart, our most vital muscle, and the rhythm of our lives.

Cardiovascular/heart disease remains the leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases (NCDs) worldwide, but knowledge is power. Understanding what heart failure really means, its symptoms, like chronic fatigue, and key risk factors, gives us the tools to protect ourselves and those around us.

Prevention is better than cure:
✅ Stay active, don’t be sedentary
✅ Eat fresh, low-sodium meals
✅ Go for regular health check-ups
✅ Know your risk

This World Heart Day, let’s remind ourselves:
You have more control over your heart health than you think.

Let’s put our Hearts in Action, as a community, for our families, and for ourselves. Because when we support each other in health, we thrive together and move closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being for all.

At just 25 years old, Muhammad Zulfitri from Terengganu has faced more battles than most do in a lifetime. He was diagnosed with multiple congenital heart defects at just 40 days old, including Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) (a condition where both main arteries come from the same chamber), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) (holes in the walls of his heart). He had his first heart surgery before he was even 3 months old.

As he got older, his condition became more complex. At age 10, Zulfitri underwent another surgery to treat LVOT obstruction and sub-aortic stenosis—narrowing the heart’s outflow tract—along with aortic regurgitation, where blood flowed backward through the heart valve. Thankfully, the surgery was a success, and Zulfitri was able to continue his schooling just like other children his age.

But through it all, Zulfitri stayed strong, and his family, especially his parents, never gave up. Though he’s unable to work due to his condition, he still helps his parents sell corn by the roadside—doing what he can, when he can.

In July 2025, Zulfitri was rushed to IJN for two major procedures. Complications arose, and for nearly a month, he lay in the ICU, unresponsive, suffering seizures for the first time in his life. His family feared the worst.

But today, Zulfitri is slowly recovering, thanks to your donations through the IJN Foundation. Your support meant he could receive the treatment he desperately needed, free from the worry of mounting medical costs.

Your generosity is more than financial aid, it’s hope, strength, and life for patients like Zulfitri.

Help us save more lives. Donate to the IJN Foundation today.

Lim Bee Eng, a 65-year-old woman from Kedah, is more than just a tailor, she’s a symbol of resilience. Despite living with a complex heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), she continued to sew, working tirelessly until her health forced her to stop three months ago.

Diagnosed with congenital heart disease as a child, Lim underwent a life-saving BT Shunt procedure at just 7 years old. For decades, she lived with courage and hope, but now her heart struggles more than ever.

Lim and her husband, 71, who works part-time at a local coffee stall to make ends meet, face the harsh reality of expensive treatments in Kuala Lumpur. Their only child works as a plumber, barely able to support himself, leaving the family’s future uncertain.

They reached out to the IJN Foundation for financial aid. This crucial support is not just a payment for medical bills; it is a lifeline and a beacon of hope for Lim and her small family to afford her treatment at IJN.

Your support doesn’t just pay for medical bills it saves lives and restores dignity, especially for elders like Lim who deserve a second chance. Together, we can help Lim and many others continue their fight.

Gulam is a 68-year-old who lives a quiet and modest life. Unemployed due to age and health challenges, he shares a rented apartment with his 59-year-old wife who works as a grocery store assistant. Her income and a few support from their son who has his very own family are their only sources.

One day, Gulam experienced sudden and intense chest pain. He was brought to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), where doctors quickly recognised the severity of his condition. He was immediately referred to the IJN for urgent treatment.

At IJN, Gulam was diagnosed with a critical heart blockage. He underwent an emergency Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Primary PCI) — a procedure where doctors use a small balloon and stent to open up blocked heart arteries and restore blood flow. To support his heart during this critical phase, doctors also used an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) — a mechanical device that helps the heart pump more effectively.

These interventions were life-saving. But the cost of such urgent and specialised treatment was far beyond what Gulam and his wife could afford.

With no steady income and only his wife’s modest earnings, the couple feared what would come next. Thankfully, through the IJN
Foundation’s Patient Assistance Programme, Gulam received the financial support he needed to proceed with treatment.
Today, Gulam is slowly recovering at home under the care of his devoted wife. Each day brings progress — and gratitude for the second chance he’s been given.
Gulam’s story is one of many. Countless patients walk through IJN’s doors every year, in urgent need of treatment, but without the means to afford it.
Your contribution to the IJN Foundation can give someone’s father, mother, or child another chance at life.
Let’s donate and help many more underprivilege patients who urgently need treatments.

Ng Eu Tian is a young salesman whose modest salary barely covers his daily expenses. Living with his older brother and relying on his parents’ car or public transport, Eu Tian’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome — a rare genetic disorder that weakens the body’s connective tissues, putting his heart and blood vessels at serious risk.
Recently, Eu Tian faced a critical health emergency when excess fluid built up around his heart, pressing on it and threatening his life. He underwent an urgent open pericardial effusion procedure, where doctors drained the fluid to relieve the pressure and give his heart a chance to heal.

When Eu Tian learned about the cost of this life-saving treatment, anxiety set in. As a young adult earning just enough to support himself, the expense was overwhelming. Despite any savings he had, it was simply not enough. The uncertainty of his future weighed heavily on
him.

Thanks to the support from IJN Foundation’s Patient Assistance Programme, Eu Tian was able to receive the treatment he desperately needed. This assistance eased the financial burden on him and his family, giving him hope and strength to focus on recovery.

Now, under the loving care of his dedicated parents, Eu Tian is recovering and has slowly returned to work. Determined to stay strong, he maintains a healthy lifestyle by swimming and going to the gym several times a week.
The cost of heart disease treatment can be overwhelming, and a healthy body is not something everyone can afford. Your generosity gives hope and access to critical care for those who need it most. Your support makes a lifesaving difference.

At 58, Ali Shahdan, a single father from Kuala Lipis, Pahang, has known the meaning of hard work and sacrifice. As a rubber tapper, his days often began before sunrise. With no fixed income and a physically demanding job, Ali never thought he’d one day face a battle far tougher than earning a living — a fight for his life.

In 2022, doctors discovered blockages in his heart, and he
underwent stent insertion at the IJN. Things seemed to settle — until December 2023, when he was rushed to the hospital with unstable angina.

By June 2025, the situation became critical. Ali was diagnosed with severe coronary artery disease and required angioplasty, a life-saving procedure where doctors insert a small balloon to open up clogged heart arteries and restore blood flow — followed by placing a stent to keep them open. Without the procedure, Ali’s chances were slim. But for his family, the question wasn’t about choice — it was about cost. Ali now lives with his daughter, a single mother and also a nurse, who juggles her shifts at the hospital while caring for him and her children. His four children — all married with families of their own — pooled what little they had to fund the treatment. But it wasn’t enough.
That’s where the IJN Foundation stepped in.
With IJNF support, Ali received the treatment he needed. This heart wrenching experience has given a him a sign and a second chance at
life to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Eat Smart, Love Your Heart
A heart-healthy life starts on your plate. What you eat today shapes your heart tomorrow. 🫀

Did you know? Adults only need 1 teaspoon of salt a day, but most of us eat way more without realising!

Here’s how to eat your way to a healthier heart:
– Go fresh, not processed
– Cut down on salt and sauces
– Use herbs and spices instead of salt: try turmeric, lemongrass, cinnamon, or lime leaves for natural flavour!

Master the healthy plate portion:
▪️ 25% protein
▪️ 25% starch
▪️ 50% veggies

Eating out a lot? No worries, portion control is your secret weapon. Keep it balanced, eat in moderation, and skip that extra sambal!

Your heart will thank you later.

Feeling unusually tired, low on energy, or short of breath? Don’t just chalk it up to stress, a busy schedule, or getting older. These could be early signs of heart failure and are often subtle, but it is important not to overlook them.

🫀 Fatigue is one of the most common and overlooked symptoms of heart failure. When your heart isn’t pumping effectively, your body doesn’t get the oxygen and nutrients it needs, thus leaving you feeling drained and worn out.

Take Tan Kim Chye, 65, a retired carpenter from Kulim, Kedah. He shared with us during a home visit that he used to experience dizzy spells and would feel tired all day; even a short walk would leave him breathless. After being diagnosed with Three Vessel Disease (TVD), he underwent successful Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) with financial support from the Patient Assistance Programme. Today, he’s enjoying a significantly better quality of life. His story is a powerful reminder not to ignore the early signs.

Listen to your body. Speak to a doctor. Early detection can make all the difference.

❤️ Your heart works hard for you; take care of it in return.
