📌Oral Presentation Spotlight -
MBTS proudly honored Dr.Anis Zarina from Department of Transfusion Medicine Hospital TengkuAmpuan Rahimah (HTAR) Klang for presenting her research titled :
Augmentation of the Massive Transfusion Protocol at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Malaysia: Cost and Care Benefits
The Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) at Hospital TengkuAmpuan Rahimah (HTAR) was enhanced to improve the management of patients with severe bleeding through faster and more coordinated delivery of blood products. Originally implemented in 2013, the protocol aimed to standardize the transfusion process across departments but was later revised due to delays, workflow gaps, and blood product wastage.
Between 2018 and 2022, data analysis and multidisciplinary discussions led to the introduction of a refined MTP supported by Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and staff training through Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions. The revised protocol distinguished between trauma and obstetric cases, with specific product combinations with additionalextra Cryoprecipitate for obstetric patients, to better suit different clinical needs.
Following implementation, the improved MTP achieved notable results, including a reduction in blood product turnaround time from 45 to 30 minutes and a 50% decrease in product wastage, saving approximately RM1470. These outcomes demonstrate enhanced workflow efficiency, improved patient care, and more cost-effective use of blood products, with ongoing annual reviews planned to ensure continuous quality improvement.
