Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. The frequency and severity of symptoms can vary, and triggers may include cold weather, fatigue or emotional stress. While modern medicine attributes asthma to airway inflammation and hyperreactivity, Traditional Chinese Medicine views it as an imbalance of the body’s internal systems. In long-standing or recurrent cases, where attacks are easily triggered by exhaustion or occur more often at night. The root cause is often linked to Kidney deficiency syndrome. Patients with this pattern commonly experience shortness of breath that worsens on exertion, difficulty inhaling deeply, fatigue, weakness in the lower back and knees, and sometimes cold limbs. These signs indicate that the Kidneys are too weak to "grasp the Qi" and assist the Lungs in respiration.

The Kidneys are considered the foundation of Qi and are responsible for “receiving and grasping the Qi” that the Lungs draw in. When Kidney Qi is deficient, whether due to chronic illness, aging, excessive work, or constitutional weakness, the Kidneys fail to anchor the Lung Qi, leading to wheezing and breathlessness. Two subtypes which are Kidney Yang deficiency which presents with cold sensations, weakness, and clear sputum and Kidney Yin deficiency which presents with dryness, night sweats, and a red tongue with little coating. In both cases, the deficiency makes the body vulnerable to recurrent asthma attacks. The treatment principle is to tonify the Kidneys, strengthen the Qi, and help the Lungs grasp and descend the breath.

Herbs include Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan for Kidney Deficiency. Acupuncture help reinforce the connection between the Lung and Kidney systems. Points such as Shen Shu (BL23), Tai Xi (KI3) tonify Kidney Qi. Moxibustion helping to warm and nourish the lower back and enhance Qi circulation. Patients should maintain warmth, especially around the lower back, feet, and avoid overwork. Nourishing foods like black sesame, walnut, lamb, and goji berries can support Kidney energy. Gentle breathing, meditation, or Qi Gong can further enhance the flow of qi.💕

We call a disease caused by acute viral infections of the Upper Respiratory Tract which are the nose and throat as Common Cold.

Common Cold is caused by the External Pathogens or External Factors (外邪), namely Wind, Heat, Dampness, Fire, Dryness and Cold which also known as Six Evils (六淫) according to the Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Common Cold mostly occurs when there is season of changing (换季) or environmental changes which bring the External Pathogens. Sometimes groups of External Pathogens may occur together.

Common Cold is considered as an Exterior Syndrome and it can be further divided into 3 types which are Wind-Cold type (风寒型), Wind-Heat type (风热型) and Summer Heat Dampness type (暑湿型). Wind-Cold type of common cold is the most common type that will be caught during the season of changing or in a cold environment.

The Main Symptoms indicated for Wind-Cold type of common cold are severe aversion to cold, mild fever, nose blockage, running nose with clear nasal discharges, itching throat and no sweating.

Treatment methods such as Herbal Medicines, Acupuncture, Guasha or Dry Cupping are often used to treat and ease the symptoms. Herbs used will usually be warm in nature such as Ginger (生姜 Shen Jiang) and Ramulus Cinnamomi (桂枝 Gui Zhi) which aim to induce sweating to dispel the cold and wind pathogenic factors from the body.

There are two main categories of obesity in Chinese Medicine theory: "excess obesity" and "deficient obesity". Based on the modern lifestyle, most obese people belong to the latter category—deficient obesity.

In the traditional sense, even "excess obesity" is rooted in deficiency. The term "excess" here refers to the accumulation of pathogenic factors like phlegm-dampness and blood stasis in the body, which leads to obesity. The root cause is yang deficiency—insufficient yang energy in the body results in poor driving force and slow metabolism, causing metabolic waste to accumulate either inside the blood vessels (such as high blood lipids and uric acid) or outside the blood vessels, forming excess water, dampness and fat.The Huangdi Neijing states: "Yang transforms qi, and yin forms matter."

Obesity related to yang deficiency is usually associated with spleen yang deficiency and kidney yang deficiency.

Why are there so many people with yang deficiency? The reasons include irregular eating habits, frequent late nights, emotional stagnation, insufficient physical activity and a preference for cold or raw foods.

Traditional Chinese Medicine addresses obesity and yang deficiency by focusing on regulating and tonifying yang energy, especially the spleen and kidney yang. By using herbal remedies that warm and invigorate yang, which help stimulate metabolism, promote the transformation and transportation of fluids, thus reduce phlegm-dampness accumulation.

Acupuncture and moxibustion help to improve circulation and restore the body’s balance of yin and yang, addressing both the root cause and the symptoms of obesity. Along with dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes, Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a holistic approach to weight management and overall health improvement.💕
