Although it is more common to get period cramps before or during menstruation, some people also experience it post menstruation. Cramping after your period is usually felt in your lower abdomen and back. It can be accompanied with pain in your hips and thighs. Some people also experience nausea, lightheadedness and even bloating, constipation or diarrhea. Some of the possible causes of this include endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, adenomyosis or pelvic inflammatory diseases. However, it is also possible to experience this without any known gynecological diagnosis.

Post menstrual cramps can be attributed to various factors:
- Qi and Blood Deficiency: After losing blood from menstruation, the lack of vital Qi and blood may cause inadequate nourishment, leading to pain after menstruation. People with this pattern are usually born with weak constitution, has had a serious illness, or even due to poor lifestyle or aging. Prolonged or heavy menstruation eventually may lead to Qi and Blood deficiency too.

- Blood Stasis or Qi Stagnation: Lingering blood stasis or disrupted Qi flow may result in abdominal pain after menstruation. Emotional factors and stress affect the Liver, leading to Qi stagnation and unsmooth clearing of blood during menstruation.

- Cold Invasion: Exposure to cold can cause blood and Qi stagnation. It is important to keep warm during menstruation, by wearing clothes that cover the abdominal area, lower back and also legs. It is also not advisable to take cold drinks and food during and right before menstruation.

- Weak Uterine Muscles: Weakness in uterine muscles may lead to incomplete expulsion of menstrual blood, causing pain. It is advisable to practice regular exercises to strengthen the core and pelvic floor.

Chinese Medicine treatments include herbs, acupuncture and moxibustion. It is highly advisable to eat warm and nutritious food, especially Qi and blood building foods during and after menstruation. Don’t over exercise or overtire the body during menstruation. Adequate rest is recommended and practice cycle syncing your exercise with your mentruation.💕

One of the acupoints used is Nei Ting 内庭 (ST 44). This point is useful to clear heat from the Stomach meridian and resolve damp heat in the intestines. Her eczema flare up is due to accumulation of damp heat based on her tongue and pulse diagnosis. In Chinese Medicine, eczema flare up is often caused by damp heat.
It is normal to have ups and downs with skin issues like eczema. Triggers such as food, environment, mood and stress affects the skin greatly. Acupuncture is done to calm down the skin as well as resolving the internal imbalances.

Source Qi 元气 (Yuan Qi) 元气, often known as Original Qi or Source Qi, is the most fundamental and deeply rooted form of Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is inherited from birth from one’s parents and stored in the Kidneys, forming the constitutional foundation of growth, development, and vitality throughout life.

Unlike Defensive Qi (卫气) which protects the exterior and Nutritive Qi (营气) which nourishes the interior through the meridians, Yuan Qi (元气) acts as the motivating force that activates and supports all physiological functions. It originates in the Kidneys and is distributed throughout the body via Triple Energiser, providing the dynamic power necessary for organ function, metabolism, reproduction, and longevity. When Yuan Qi is abundant, the body demonstrates strong resilience, healthy development, and balanced aging; when it is deficient, signs such as developmental delay, chronic fatigue, infertility, premature aging, or weakness of the lower back and knees may appear.

Since Yuan Qi (元气) is congenital in nature, it cannot be directly replenished once depleted. However, it can be conserved and supported through appropriate therapeutic strategies. Herbal medicine focuses on tonifying Kidney Qi and Kidney Essence which indirectly nourish and protect Yuan Qi.

Classical formulas such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan are commonly used for Kidney Yin deficiency, while Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is prescribed when Kidney Yang deficiency is present. These formulas aim not to replace Yuan Qi, but to slow its depletion and enhance its functional expression.

The practices we're introducing here are "Returning Yang Position" (Huan Yang Wo 还阳卧) and "HunYuan Sleep" (HunYuan Wo 混元卧).

First, let's understand the role of the kidneys and Kidney Yang syndromes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, the kidneys store and release Essence (Jing 精), governing growth, reproduction, and balancing Yin and Yang for the entire body. Maintaining the balance between Yin and Yang is crucial for health. Imbalances are known as syndromes, underlying causes of diseases or health conditions.

Kidney Yang Deficiency Syndrome can result from chronic diseases, excessive sexual activity, overexertion, over-exercise, poor diet, and exposure to external cold and dampness. Symptoms include sensitivity to cold, cold extremities, fatigue, tinnitus, dizziness, weak legs, impotence, leg swelling, lower back soreness, weak and cold knees, infertility in women, premature ej*******on, and pale complexion.

"Huan Yang Wo" (还阳卧) and "HunYuan Wo" (混元卧) involve specific postures to positively impact Kidney Yang. Spreading the legs apart induces soreness on the inner thighs, stimulating Kidney meridian acupoints, gathering Qi and Blood to strengthen the Kidney and restore Yang.

Method of Huan Yang Wo (还阳卧) : Lie down naturally with relaxed hip joints. Form a circular shape with the legs, soles facing each other, and heels aligning with the perineum. Place palms near the thighs' base, facing the abdomen.

Method of HunYuan Wo (混元卧) : An advanced version of Huan Yang Wo, in a supine position, form a circular shape with legs, soles facing each other, and heels aligning with the perineum. Overlap or gently cross hands on top of the head, palms facing the BaiHui 百会 acupoint.

Practice these for about 30 minutes each night before bedtime.💕💪

Stomach Fire/Stomach Heat

The picture above shows our patient who had Stomach fire/Stomach heat initially causing her frequent hunger, bloating, gastric, acid reflux, dry mouth and cravings during periods. After consuming 2-days of herbal medicine, all these symptoms have subsided and we can see the changes obviously by the tongue.

Patient is very happy with the results and she was surprised by the effectiveness of herbal medicine. So, what is “Stomach fire/Stomach heat” and what are the causes of it?

The typical symptoms for “Stomach Fire/Stomach heat” are burning pain in the stomach(aka gastric), constant unsatisfactory hunger(aka food craving), sour regurgitation(aka acid reflux), nausea, swollen, painful or bleeding gums, bad mouth breath, thirst with desire for cold drinks etc.

As the “Heat” has the nature of drying, “Stomach fire/Stomach heat” will dry the fluids of the stomach leading to “Stomach Yin Deficiency” causing thirst, dry mouth and throat, constipation etc. Mouth and throat will feel extremely dry in the afternoon as that time is governed by Yin. Other than that, people also feel no appetite or feel full after eating small amounts of food. This is because there is insufficient stomach fluid to process the food.

There are various causes for “Stomach fire/Stomach heat”. The major cause is over-consumption of hot and spicy foods. Hot foods refers to all spicy foods, most meats and most nuts. For Hot drinks, it refers to coffee, wine, and all alcoholic drinks(aka liquor). Ci******es also are heat in nature. Thus, those regular smokers, regular alcohol consumers, meat fans and spicy overeaters are most likely to have this “Stomach fire/Stomach heat”.

Herbal medicine and Acupuncture treatments are very effective to eliminate “Stomach fire/Stomach heat”. Guasha and Fire Cupping are also good in clearing the heat. If you are having any symptoms stated above, you are advised to consult your professional physician.
