Cold extremities often seen as a harmless condition, however Traditional Chinese Medicine theory views cold extremities as a sign of a deeper issue, often linked to an imbalance between the body’s yin and yang energies.

Cold hands and feet are associated with a condition known as jue, which occurs when the body’s yin and yang energies fail to connect properly. Yang energy is responsible for warming and activating the body, especially the limbs, while yin energy nourishes and supports the organs. For optimal health, these two energies need to be in balance and interconnected. When they can’t unite effectively, it leads to jue, manifesting as cold extremities.

The underlying causes of cold limbs are usually related to energy imbalances, particularly:
1. Meridian Obstruction
2. Qi and Blood Deficiency
3. Depleted Yang Energy

To address the issue of cold extremities, Chinese Medicine employs various treatment methods aimed at restoring the balance of yin and yang. Some of these include:

1. Chinese Herbal Medicine: Herbal formulas designed to invigorate the flow of qi, warm the body, and nourish yang energy. Common herbs include Angelica sinensis(dang gui 当归), ginseng(人参) and cinnamon(桂枝).

2. Acupuncture and Moxibustion: These therapies are used to unblock meridians, stimulate qi flow, and warm the body. Moxibustion, in particular, involves the burning of mugwort near specific acupuncture points to stimulate yang.

3. Cupping and Guasha: These techniques are used to promote circulation, remove stagnation, and improve energy flow throughout the body.

4. Aerobic Exercise: Regular movement, such as jogging, tai chi, or skipping rope, helps enhance blood circulation and metabolism, thereby improving the flow of qi and blood to the extremities. Light to moderate exercise is recommended, as heavy exertion can lead to “leaking” of yang energy.

5. Foot Soaks: Soaking the feet in warm water with herbs can help to relax the body, improve circulation, and warm the extremities.

Too much dreams while you’re sleeping may affect your sleep quality. A good night’s sleep is defined as having to sleep throughout the night and undisturbed by dreams. Waking up feeling fresh and energetic is important too.

People with nightmares, vivid and too many dreams often wake up feeling sluggish, tired and feel like didn’t sleep at all. In order to have good sleep, the Qi has to flow smoothly. This allows the organ system to function properly and to support detoxification, rest and healing. When there is Qi blockage, sleep quality is affected.

The major organs that are affected for excessive dreaming are the heart, liver and gallbladder. The Shen 神 (spirit) becomes dissociated and scattered causing vivid dreams and nightmares.

This is likely due to Qi and blood deficiency and/or stagnation, excess phlegm and heat. The Spleen and Stomach are also in charge of having a good sleep. When the digestive system is not balanced, it will definitely affect your sleep.

Therefore it is very important to take care of your diet. Dont eat too close to bedtime, make sure your stomach have time to digest and rewind before your sleeping time. Have early and light dinner instead. Dont take caffeine after 4pm as it may affect your sleep.

Cut down on processed food and desserts, eat more warming and easy to digest food. Acupuncture helps to relax your body & mind. It moves the Qi and blood ensuring to have good night’s rest. It helps to ease any anxiousness and stress.

Herbal medicine is a good addition for the calming effects. It also balances any issues like heat, phlegm and stomach issues like indigestion.

Failure of Lung Qi in dispersion 肺气不宣, means that lung Qi cannot be ventilated. The lungs are taking charge of Qi and controlling breathing, dominating skin and hair, while the nose being windows of lungs. Due to the invasion of external pathogens, the skin pores are closed and cold, and the lung qi cannot be ventilated, a series of upper respiratory symptoms such as aversion to cold and fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, no sweat and coughing may occur.

According to Chinese medicine theory, the lungs governs the dispersion ascending and purification descendant. The dispersal refers to the upward and outward distribution of lung Qi, which can expel the turbid Qi in the body, at the same time distribute the body fluid and water grain essence transferred by the spleen to the whole body. Insufficient lung Qi or abnormal ascending and exiting will affect the respiratory movement of the lungs, resulting in abnormal breathing.

If the lung Qi is out of balance, it can cause unfavorable circulation of heart blood, resulting in palpitations, chest tightness, cyanotic lips and nails. If the lung qi is insufficient, there will be symptoms of Qi deficiency such as weak breathing or insufficient breath, low voice, and fatigue.

The therapeutic principle would be to promote the dispersing function of the lung. Herbs involve Xingren 杏仁, Jiegeng 桔梗 Jingjie 荆芥, Fangfeng 防风, Mahuang 麻黄, Guizhi 桂枝, Chanyi, Ginger姜, Congbai葱白, etc. Acupoints taken in treatment such as: Feishu 肺俞, Danzhong 膻中, Lieque 列缺, Taiyuan 太渊, Chize尺泽、Zusanli 足三里.

Keep the surrounding ventilated with fresh air, avoid contact with irritating gas and dust as much as possible, quit smoking. Diet should be light and easy to digest, generally avoiding spicy, raw and cold food. Practise deep breathing, through deep more fresh air can be taken in. This is the functiom of exhaling the old and inhaling the new.

Acne vulgaris or common acne is a common inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous glands characterized by papules, comedones, pustules, inflamed nodules and superficial pus filled cysts.

There are many causes of acne in Chinese Medicine, mainly due to deficiency of internal organs, heat formation from stagnation, imbalances of yin and yang, poor diet, excessive stress and lack of sleep.

Acne primarily involves damp and heat but can also have dryness and heat when there is yin deficiency or deficiency heat.

Below are the common acne types and its causes:
- Bright and dark red acne: heat exuberance
- Pale red: deficiency heat
- Purplish: blood stagnation
- Purplish red: blood stasis with heat
- Whiteheads: phlegm, dampness and turbidity
- Yellow pus: damp heat - Oily and greasy skin: dampness or damp heat
- Dry skin: deficiency heat Other than a good skincare routine to address your skin type and issues, internal care is just as important.

Prescribed and customized herbal medicine is given depending on the type of acne. It is common to have more than 1 type of acne. Acupuncture helps to reduce inflammation, fasten healing and regulate internal imbalances too.

Acne may take a longer time to heal as it is just a reflection of internal imbalances. Once the internal issues are addressed, the skin will start to reciprocate. Do contact us if you’d like to know more about your acne!

The concept that "the Spleen governs the muscles 脾主肌肉" emphasizes the close relationship between the Spleen organ and the muscular system and how the proper functioning of the Spleen is essential for maintaining healthy muscles.

Spleen is responsible for the transformation and transportation of food and fluids, as well as the production of Qi (vital energy) and Blood in Chinese Medicine theory. It plays a central role in digestion by breaking down ingested food and extracting nutrients. These nutrients are then distributed throughout the body to provide energy and nourishment. While muscles require a constant supply of nutrients, particularly energy in the form of Qi and Blood to function optimally. They need to be nourished for activities ranging from basic movement to more strenuous tasks.

If the Spleen's function is compromised, it can lead to imbalances such as Qi and Blood deficiency. This, in turn, can result in weakened muscles, fatigue, and even muscle atrophy. Digestive issues, poor appetite, and loose stools are signs that the Spleen might be imbalance and potentially affecting the muscles.

To support healthy muscles, we recommend maintaining the Spleen's proper function. This can be achieved through dietary choices that are easy to digest and promote Qi and Blood production. Eating warm, cooked foods balance meal and avoid excessive raw or cold foods can help support the Spleen's energy.

The concept of "the Spleen governs the muscles" is rooted in traditional Chinese medical theory. It may not have direct parallels in Western medical terminology. If you have concerns about muscle health or overall well-being, consult with a qualified healthcare professional.💕

“End of Heat” | CHU SHU 处暑 | 08.23 - 09.06 is the 14th seasonal point (节气) of the 24 seasonal points in Chinese Calendar which is the time of year when intense summer heat started to fade and move into cooler nights and more mild days.

During this period, you will not feel the autumn chill yet, but tend to get tired more often due to the changes in your Yin and Yang energies during seasonal transitions. This transition period is known as “Qiu Lao Hu” 秋老虎, literally means “Autumn Tiger”, or as Westerners might colloquially refer to it, “Indian summer”.

It is important to have a regular sleeping schedule during this period. You should go to bed early like before 11pm and be an early riser. Take a nap if possible, a bit of exercise will be very helpful. These allow our bodies to properly go through the circadian rhythm and giving our lungs and immune system the boost they need.

Common phenomena during this period is that our skin becomes dry as we move to a cooler season. We can consume foods that are gently moistening and tonify Qi, such as Lychee, pear, apple and grape to cool and moisten the body. Gentle nourishment is the key to avoid excess and stagnation in the body during this period.

In addition, avoid spicy and fried foods as they can have a drying effect and increase sweating that leads to the dryness in the body. Sour foods: vinegar, picked vegetables, and plums help astringe and minimize fluid loss through sweating.

We can also consume food-herbs that are useful in nourishment during this period. These includes Yu Zhu aka Solomon seal (玉竹), Lily Buds (百合), Lotus Seed (莲子) and Glehniae root (沙参).

In Chinese Medicine theory, each internal organ manifests the outside of the body: lungs to skin, liver to eyes, kidney to ears, spleen to lips, and stomach and heart to tongue. Skin is the biggest organ in the body thus plays a big role in the immune system.

When the body's immune system is weak, evil qi (邪气) could enter the body causing sickness. This include dizziness, nausea, fatigue and vertigo.
Moxibustion, herbs and acupuncture are great modalities to address these issues.

21/08/2025

Some might experience unusual sudden "stomach pain". First of all, it's important for us to rule out some emergency cases for example, acute abdominalgia that include acute appendicitis, acute perforation of gastric and duodenal ulcer, intestinal obstruction, acute pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis, ectopic pregnancy, fibroid etc.

For the above cases, it's necessary to go for hospital to receive standard treatment. Else, if the diagnosis is proven functional abnormalities, we might refer to the stomach colic issue as we are going to explain as below.

Stomach colic is a common term that represent the symptom of acute unbearable pain of stomach. It is normally caused by spasm, indigestion, gastric ulcers, gastritis, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), polyps and so on. The pain could subside based on its severity, some may need painkiller or other related treatment, some may lead to bloating, vomit, chills, or collapse.

In Chinese Medicine theory, the stomach Qi stagnation is the main cause of stomach colic. And the main reason of stomach Qi stagnation is no other than emotions and poor eating habits. Strong emotions can affect our stomach Qi especially during eating, frustration, moodiness, anger, tension or dissatisfaction.

Poor eating habits like eating while working, driving, playing hand phones, in hurry or doing vigorous exercise after eating could also disrupt the stomach Qi. Therefore it is important to regulate the Stomach Qi flow from time to time. If the stomach Qi get stagnant for long period of time, eventually it will lead to blood stasis, stomach fire. If the foods are not digested properly, it might lead to the formation of phlegm and Dampness.

Acupuncture and Herbal medicine is a good combination of alternative treatment to regulate stomach Qi flow. Herbal medication like citrus peel (陈皮), xiang fu (香附), xiang yuan (香椽) are the main ingredients of herbal to sooth the stomach Qi flow. They also helps to calm the excessive liver Qi and strengthen the spleen, which in general help to boost up the digestive system.
