🇲🇾 “Seeing Malaysia in Full Colour: An Ophthalmologist’s Take on the Flag”
A National Day Reflection – Dr Chua CN, 30/8/2025

The Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory, the Malaysian flag) has flown proudly for decades, though not without the occasional squabble over its design. Politicians, ever eager for a stage, have at times shown exaggerated resentment over its accidental improper display for their own gain. But on this National Day, it is worth setting aside the noise and looking at our flag afresh — through the prism of the eye, and the colours that make it shine.

🔵 Blue – Unity in Focus
Mark Zuckerberg, who has red–green colour-blindness, chose blue for Facebook’s logo because it is the hue he perceives most clearly. On the Jalur Gemilang, blue represents the unity of Malaysia’s many ethnicities and states. The parallel is clear: just as Zuckerberg’s choice of blue was guided by clarity of vision, the flag’s blue reminds us that unity remains the most distinct and enduring foundation in a nation of diverse perspectives.

🔴 Red – More Than a Charge
We have all heard that bulls charge at red. In truth, bulls are colour-blind; it is the movement of the cloth that provokes them. Red in the Jalur Gemilang stands for courage, but also cautions us that quarrels are rarely about colour alone — rather, they are about the way things are waved before us.

🟡 Yellow – The Colour of Crown and Clarity
Yellow is the royal hue, representing our monarchy. It is also the colour of lutein — a vital nutrient that protects the retina and keeps vision sharp. A nation, like an eye, flourishes when it is nourished with values that strengthen rather than weaken.

⚪ White – A Spectrum Within
White light is never truly plain. Passed through a prism, it reveals seven radiant colours. Malaysia too is made up of many hues — races, faiths, and traditions — that shine brightest when united. Sadly, there are those who would prefer to play the prism backwards, fracturing harmony into discord.

✨ Closing Thought
The Jalur Gemilang is more than fabric and colour. Like the human eye, each part alone is powerless, but together they bring clarity. On this National Day, may Malaysia keep its gaze steady, looking forward as one nation.

🇲🇾 “Melihat Malaysia Dalam Warna Penuh: Pandangan Seorang Pakar Mata Tentang Jalur Gemilang”
Renungan Hari Kebangsaan – Dr Chua CN, 30/8/2025

🔴 Merah – Lebih Dari Sekadar Amarah
Kita sering dengar bahawa lembu menyerbu warna merah.
