At the prestigious Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) Conference, Dato’ Dr Tamil Selvan, Consultant Cardiologist at CVSKL, presented findings from the Malaysia Intravascular Lithotripsy Study, a Malaysian collaboration with Elixir Medical.

The study evaluated a new treatment technique called Hertz Contact Intravascular Lithotripsy (HC-IVL), which uses mechanical pressure waves to gently break calcium in artery walls. This helps improve blood flow and ensures better stent expansion in patients with heavily calcified coronary arteries. Key findings included:

• 96.1% of patients were free from major cardiac events within 30 days
• 96.3% achieved optimal stent expansion with minimal blockage
• Proven effective even in complex or multi-vessel disease

These promising results highlight the potential of HC-IVL as a safer and more precise option for patients with challenging heart conditions and mark another proud milestone for CVSKL in advancing cardiovascular research on a global stage.

In celebration of World Heart Day 2025, our Senior Physiotherapist, Ms Carmen Pang, was invited as a speaker by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Management and Science University (MSU) to share valuable insights on cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiac rehabilitation helps patients rebuild confidence, restore heart strength, and maintain long-term heart health. Ms Carmen highlighted the importance of guided recovery by helping patients understand when to begin post-surgery exercises, how to safely rebuild strength, and how to overcome the fear of returning to physical activity after heart surgery.

The forum also featured experts including Dr Suhaimi bin Osman, Consultant Cardiologist from MSUMC, Puan Samirah Taufiq, Nutritionist from UKM, and Encik Saupi Nazri, a heart disease survivor and patient advocate from Kelab Cakna Jantung Malaysia.

At CVSKL, we continuously support knowledge-sharing initiatives like this, as our physiotherapy team strives to empower the public to lead healthier lives and regain confidence, even after heart surgery.

You might think it is harmless, maybe just tired muscles or dehydration. But if it happens often when you walk, it could be a sign of Peripheral Vascular/Arterial Disease (PVD). If left untreated, PVD can worsen over time and lead to tissue damage, ulcers, or even limb loss.

For patients diagnosed with Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), CVSKL offers personalised treatment plans that combine medical therapy and advanced procedures to restore healthy blood flow and prevent disease progression. Treatment options may include medications to manage cholesterol and reduce complications, along with minimally invasive endovascular techniques such as angioplasty, stenting and atherectomy. All aimed at improving circulation without the need for open surgery.

At CVSKL, our Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, Dr Tan Kong Hean, and the Vascular Team provide comprehensive assessments to accurately detect PVD. Don’t wait for the pain to worsen. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀…

When oestrogen levels drop after menopause, your heart loses one of its natural protectors. Low oestrogen can cause arteries to stiffen and cholesterol levels to rise, increasing your risk of heart disease. But that is not the only reason. After menopause, changes in blood pressure, weight, and insulin levels can also put extra strain on your heart. Together, these shifts can double a woman’s risk of a heart attack.

Dr Lee Li Ching, Consultant Cardiologist & Physician, emphasises that women often brush off symptoms as “just menopause”, until it becomes something more serious. She reminds every menopausal woman to listen to your body and take early action. A simple heart screening could make all the difference.

Hypertension continues to be a growing concern in Malaysia, with 1 in 3 adults affected according to the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey. As one of the major risk factors for heart disease and stroke, it calls for greater awareness and a comprehensive approach to management.

At our recent CME session in Kuala Lumpur, our consultant cardiologists, Dr Wan Faizal and Dr Jayakhanthan introduced Radiofrequency Renal Denervation (RF RDN) — a minimally invasive treatment designed for patients whose blood pressure remains high despite medication. Complementing the discussion, Dr Al Fazir Omar discussed the pharmacological approach and the importance of renoprotection in blood pressure control, while Dr Wan Faizal also shared insights on Plavix in secondary prevention. The session was moderated by Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Ali, fostering a well-rounded discussion on managing this common yet complex condition.

Hypertension management is multifaceted, and CVSKL is among the few centres in Malaysia offering advanced treatment options such as RDN. We believe every individual should — exploring therapies beyond conventional medication to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Our team was proud to take part in the 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 (𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗩𝗦) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, a key meeting that gathers experts to exchange insights and advance the field of cardiothoracic care.

Dr John Chan, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at CVSKL, shared his expertise on managing functional heart valve disease and optimising therapy for patients with heart failure following coronary artery revascularisation. Mr Mok Chek Min, Cardiac Perfusionist, contributed his insights on the use and management of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), highlighting key considerations in patient care and complication management. Ms Mary Easaw, Consultant Dietitian, also spoke on the importance of nutritional management throughout the surgical journey, from preparation to recovery, and its impact on patient outcomes.

At Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL), we recognise that excellence in cardiovascular and thoracic care involves more than surgery alone. Our multidisciplinary team, including dietitians and allied health professionals, are trained to treat heart conditions comprehensively, making CVSKL a one-stop centre for complete cardiovascular and thoracic care.
