Recently, Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Ali, our Consultant Cardiologist, was invited to Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, Bhutan by Dr Mahesh Gurung, Interventional Cardiologist, to manage a highly complex case involving a patient who presented with a heart attack and a completely occluded left anterior descending (LAD) artery.

The procedure performed was a Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) for Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery, a technically demanding intervention that requires precision, experience, and advanced skill. In this case, the artery had been fully blocked for a prolonged period, making it significantly more challenging to treat compared to standard cases. The procedure involved carefully navigating specialised guidewires through the blocked segment of the artery to restore blood flow to the heart and support overall cardiac function. The procedure took approximately three and a half hours to complete, demonstrating the level of expertise required in managing such complex conditions.

Encouragingly, the patient made a good recovery and was discharged two days later, reflecting the effectiveness of timely intervention and specialised cardiac care.

In our recent visit in Surabaya, Indonesia, we had the privilege of connecting with the local community alongside our partner, Hospital Picaso, sharing a glimpse into how modern medicine is redefining the patient experience today.

During the session, we showcased the evolution of cardiovascular care, from complex coronary interventions and stent procedures to bypass techniques performed with significantly less surgical impact. These approaches help reduce patient's discomfort, support quicker recovery, and allow patients to get back to their daily routines sooner.

Together with Hospital Picaso we also highlighted newer innovations such as robotic surgery and modern treatment options for conditions like endometriosis, offering patients more precise and less invasive alternatives.

It was really encouraging to see the level of interest and engagement from the Surabaya community, and the growing awareness around seeking treatment beyond borders.

Dr Sabrina Nordin, our consultant cardiologist attended the SCMR 29th Annual Scientific Sessions in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference brought together leading experts from around the world to exchange knowledge and advance the field of cardiovascular magnetic resonance, creating a space where experience and innovation come together to improve patient care.

During the conference, Dr Sabrina took on the role of moderator for the “Read with the expert sessions: Non-ischemic Cardiomyopathy and Inflammatory Diseases.” In this session, she guided discussions among world experts as they reviewed complex cardiac MRI cases and shared insights on the use of advanced cardiac imaging in diagnosis and follow up in cardiomyopathy and inflammatory diseases. Her involvement reflects both her expertise and the trust placed in her to contribute meaningfully to conversations that shape clinical practice globally.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗩𝗦𝗞𝗟

CVSKL continues to advance its structural heart programme with the successful performance of its first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) via a left carotid artery approach — expanding procedural capability for patients with complex access anatomy.

While TAVI is most commonly performed via the femoral artery, alternative access strategies are essential for patients with small or unsuitable peripheral vessels. In this case, after comprehensive assessment and multidisciplinary planning, the team proceeded safely via a left carotid approach.

The carotid cutdown was performed by Dr Tan Kong Hean, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon. The procedure was led by our Consultant Cardiologists, Dato’ Dr Tamil Selvan Muthusamy, Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Ali and Dr Choo Gim Hooi, with valued support from Dr Mann Chandavimol, Senior Interventional Cardiologist from Thailand.

This milestone reflects strengthened multidisciplinary collaboration, structured procedural planning supported by advanced imaging, meaningful regional clinical partnership, and the continued expansion of complex structural heart capabilities — reinforcing a coordinated and sustainable approach to delivering advanced cardiac care.

As CVSKL progresses toward reinforcing its role as a growing Centre of Excellence (COE) in advanced cardiac interventions, our focus remains on building sustainable expertise, clinical governance, and patient-centred innovation for the community we serve.

It’s a small thing, just envelopes going around, but somehow the whole place softens. More smiles, more “eh thank you”, people slowing down for a moment in between everything.

Especially this year, with Dr Nadia Mohd Arifin, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, going around handing them out and keeping that Raya feeling going across the hospital.

Vascular conditions don’t always come with obvious signs, especially in the early stages.

Sometimes, small changes like leg discomfort or swelling are easy to ignore, but they may be early indicators of conditions such as peripheral artery disease, aneurysms, or deep vein thrombosis.

If left unaddressed, these conditions can progress and, in more advanced cases, may require procedures such as angioplasty and stenting, bypass surgery, aneurysm repair, or thrombectomy to restore blood flow and prevent further complications.

Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang is not only a pioneer in cardiothoracic care, but also the heart behind what CVSKL stands for today. We recently had the opportunity to engage with FP One Jakarta, one of Prudential’s top-performing agency groups, during a special health talk session held in Jakarta.

The session featured Dr Tan Kia Lean, our Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, and Dr Kua Voon Fong, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Beacon Hospital, who shared insights on vascular health and colorectal cancer. The discussion focused on recognising early warning signs, understanding risk factors, and exploring available treatment options, with an emphasis on early detection and timely intervention.

Both vascular disease and colorectal cancer share common risk factors such as lifestyle, diet, and age, making preventive care and regular screening especially important.

The programme aimed to raise awareness while encouraging simple, practical steps towards better health, from everyday lifestyle adjustments to knowing when to seek medical attention.

It was encouraging to see strong participation and engagement from attendees, reflecting a growing awareness and interest in taking proactive steps towards their health and well-being.

We recently had the opportunity to engage with employees of Kelington Group Berhad during their Wellness Programme 2026.

The session focused on a health talk by Dr Wan Faizal Wan Rahimi Shah, Consultant Cardiologist, who shared insights on ischemic heart disease, including its risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options. The programme aimed to raise awareness of cardiovascular health and encourage early detection through accessible and practical screening. An EKG mobile demonstration was also conducted by our team, helping participants understand how EKG is used in everyday practice and how to interpret the readings.

With participation from both physical and online attendees, it was encouraging to see strong engagement from staff taking an active interest in their health and well-being.

Initiatives like these allow us to bring healthcare closer to the workplace, making it more accessible while reinforcing the importance of preventive care.
