Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic, debilitating pain condition which causes sudden, severe, electric shock like pain in the face, covered by the trigeminal nerve. This nerve has three segments and your doctor will use these names to describe the distribution of the pain. These are the ophthalmic ( V1 branch - green ), the maxillary ( V2 - blue ) and mandibular nerve ( V3 - red ). Radiofrequency techniques are available for those patients whose pain conditions are no longer able be treated or controlled by oral medications alone. It involves the accurate placement of a needle through the patients cheek to reach the gasserian ganglion ( main part of the trigeminal nerve ) through a small hole at the base of the skull, from which medications or radiofrequency can be deployed to treat the condition and provide lasting relief.
